  Description

  Located on a rise in a level landscape. Ussher (1622) describes the parish church of Churchtown as in ruins (Erlington 1847-64, 1, lxxxv), and Dopping (1682-5) says it was ‘ruined time out of mind’ and was not enclosed (Ellison 1972, 12). The grass-covered remains of the N and S walls are visible with parts of the overgrown E and W walls. The base of a cross-wall (Wth 0.75m) divides it into W (int. dims 10.65m WNW-ESE; 4.95m NNE-SSW) and E (int. dims 8.7m WNW-ESE) sections, but it is not certain if this is original. Parts of the overgrown N and S walls survive (H 1.8-2m) towards the E end but there are no visible architectural features. A piece of a dressed window-surround with a glazing-groove is in the rectangular graveyard (dims c. 60m N-S; c. 35m E-W) defined by masonry walls that are obscured by vegetation. The headstones date from c. 1800 to c. 1980. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987).   Description

  Located on a rise in a level landscape. The parish church of Churchtown (ME030-006----) is in a rectangular graveyard (dims c. 60m N-S; c. 35m E-W) defined by masonry walls obscured by vegetation.   Description

  This is depicted as a large D-shaped area (ext. dims c. 110m NE-SW; c. 95m NW-SE) and described as a ‘Fort’ on the 1836 edition of the OS 6-inch map and as large oval area defined by a fosse on the 1908 edition It was recorded in 1969 (SMR file) as a raised oval area (dims 96m ENE-WSW; 75m NNW-SSE) defined by the remains of an earthen bank (at SW: Wth of base 5m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 1.8m) with an external flat-bottomed fosse or drain (Wth of top 7.5m; Wth of base 4m; ext. D 0.5m at NE to 1.6m at SW) and an outer bank (Wth of base 3-7.5m; ext. H 0.3-1m). There were slight traces of an outer fosse NNW-E (max. ext. dim. 112m NE-SW). There was an entrance at ENE. Its visible profile was removed in 1979.
