- ME030-009 Church
Description
Situated on a rise in s level landscape. A church of Clonmaduff is listed in the ecclesiastical taxation (1302-06) of Pope Nicholas IV (Cal. doc. Ire. 5, 256). Ussher (1622) describes the church and chancel of Clonmaduff as ruinous (Erlington 1847-64, 1, lxxxv), and this is confirmed by Dopping (1682-5) when the graveyard was not enclosed (Ellision 1972, 12). A community of Franciscan friars became established at a house (ME030-010----) c. 500m to the SE early in the 18th century and it lasted until 1826. They used the Black Church as their burial ground and two headstones commemorate the priors (Cogan 1862-70, 1, 121-4) within a rectangular graveyard (dims c. 40m WNW-ESE; c. 40m NNE-SSW) defined by masonry walls. The grass-covered foundations (Wth 0.7-0.8m; max. H 0.7m) of an undivided church (int. dims 18.25m WNW-ESE; 4m NNE-SSW) survive together with the W gable which has a cusped ogee-headed window. The belfry does not survive on the gable, but the crudely made base of a font, which is an octagonal stone (dim. of top 0.3-0.35m; dim of base 0.45m) with a conical perforation is almost buried nearby. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload/revision: 2 January 2015
- ME030-009001 Graveyard
Description
Situated on a rise in s level landscape. The parish church of Clonmaduff (ME030-009----) is within a rectangular graveyard (dims c. 40m WNW-ESE; c. 40m NNE-SSW) defined by masonry walls, which according to Dopping (1682-5) were not present at that time (Ellison 1972, 12). The headstones date from c. 1800 to c. 1980 and include two that commemorate the priors of Courtown friary (ME030-010----), an 18th century Franciscan house (Cogan 1862-70, 1, 121-4), that was c. 500m to the SE, which lasted until 1826. Description

- ME030-010 Religious house - Franciscan friars
Description
A community of Franciscan friars from the supressed friary at Trim (ME036-048025-) became established at Meadstown early in the 18th century on a leased farm that became known as Courtown Friary. They provided pastoral care to the medieval parishes of Bective, Rataine, Churchtown, Clonmacduff, Moymet, Tullaghanoge, and Kicooley, which became the modern parish of Dunderry. The first known prior was Fr. Francis Fay (1720-43), and as well as the cure of Dunderry they provided priests for other parishes. The last friar was Rev. Patrick Ryan, who died in 1826, after which the friary was discontinued and their effects were moved to the Franciscan friary at Multifarnham, Co. Westmeath. The friars were buried in the graveyard at the Black Church in Meadstown (ME030-009001-) where two headstones in the SE of the graveyard commemorate them. There is no evidence of any structures at the friary site that could have been connected with them. (Cogan 1862-70, 1, 121-4, 311; Conlon 2014) Archaeological testing (15E0027) by J. Stirland just to the S produced no related material (excavations.ie 2015:102) and archaeological testing (09E0060) by M. Tierney c. 100m to the E had a similar result (excavations.ie 2009:640). The cropmark of a subrectangular enclosure (dims c. 35m N-S; c. 30m E-W) is visible on aerial images (ME030-041_1 to _3) taken by a drone-mounted camera in July 2018. It has rounded corners and is defined by a wide fosse or moat feature (Wth c. 4-6m) on every side. It may be a moated site.
