• ME049-005 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Located on rise on a gentle W-facing slope. A circular enclosure (ext. diam. c. 50m) is depicted on the 1836 edition of the OS 6-inch map where it is described as a ‘Fort’, and it is depicted as a broad subcircular area (ext. dims c. 60m ENE-WSW; c. 52m NNW-SSE) on the 1912 edition. It had been removed by 1969 (SMR file) but was traceable as an oval area (int. dims c. 46m E-W; c. 36m N-S) defined by the traces of a wide fosse (Wth c. 4.5-7m) but an entrance was not identified. The rath is visible on aerial images (OSAP: 2005) and Google Earth (16/04/2003; 02/03/2010; 24/03/2012; 04/05/2019). • ME049-007 Field system
  Description

  Situated on the E-facing slope of a broad N-S ridge. Earthworks, covering an area of about 17 ha (c. 42 acres) are visible on aerial photographs (GSIAP: N 604, 605) occupying two modern fields. In the N field silted ditches create large rectangular fields (dims c. 50-100m x 40-60m). In the S field the plots are more varied in size (dims 27m x 16m to 145m x 60m) and the relict banks (Wth of base c. 5m; H c. 0.3m) and silted ditches (Wth c. 3-4m; D c. 0.6-0.8m) are generally parallel with the present field boundaries. A relatively narrow NW-SE strip (Wth 13-16) defined by ditches and extending through the length of the field (L c. 200m) close to its centre could be a roadway and it separates fairly regular rectangular plots to the SW with a circular enclosure (ME049-008----) where the boundaries are more chaotic in its vicinity. • ME049-008 Enclosure
  Description

  Situated on the E-facing slope of a broad N-S ridge and within the field system (ME049-007----). This is a circular grass-covered area (int. diam. 49m NNW-SSE; 47m ENE-SWW) defined by a silted ditch (at WSW: Wth of top 4m; ext. D 0.2m; at NNW: Wth of top 6m; int. D 0.2m; ext. D 0.7m). An entrance is not identified but some of the silted ditches of the field system connect with the fosse. A single house site (ME048-008001-) is visible as a slightly raised grass-covered platform (dims 4m x 2.5m) defined by a slight hollow located c. 30m to the N of the enclosure The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987).
