• ME049-004 Church
  Description

  Situated at the crest of the W side of a small N-S valley, with a NW-SE section of the N-S stream c. 50m to the E. The chapel of Gallowe is amongst the possessions of the Augustinian priory of St Peter’s at Newtown Trim (ME036-049003-) at the Suppression in 1540 (White 1943, 294, 297). Ussher (1622) describes the church and chancel at Galloe as ruined (Erlington 1847-64, 1, lxxviii). According to the Dopping Visitation (1682-5) Gallow had been a chapel-of-ease in Galtrim parish but became an independent rectory in 1615. However, the church and chancel were in ruins, although the graveyard was fenced (Ellison 1972, 5). The foundations of a small building (dims c. 7m E-W; c. 5m N-S) are visible as earth and stone banks (Wth 1.7-3.3m; H 0.1-0.6m) with a small platform (dims 2.5m x 2.5m) attached to the W. Originally the structure may have been extended to the E beneath a small mortuary enclosure (ext. dims 9.1m E-W; 6.25m N-S) defined by masonry walls (Wth 0.5m; H 1.7-2m) that was probably built in the 1830s. The church is within a subrectangular graveyard (dims c. 55m E-W; c. 40m N-S) defined and retained by masonry walls with evidence of a slight bank inside the perimeter, which is probably the result of cutting back the mound of the graveyard from the top of the walls. Seven architectural fragments, including four from a single-light ogee-headed window, lie in the W part of the graveyard. A fragment of what may be a cross-slab (Wth 0.24m; H 0.75m; T 0.1m) is also in the graveyard. A triangular-shaped stone (Wth 0.66m; H 0.32m; T 0.16m), possibly a fragment from a wall monument, has been set on the ground immediately E of the graveyard entrance; it is carved with a representation of the scourging of Christ. • ME049-004001 Graveyard
  Description

  Sub-oval shaped enclosure (c. 53m E-W; c. 42m N-S) delimited by an enclosing wall. The interior of the graveyard is level with the top of the wall and rises towards the centre. The graveyard contains the remains of church (ME049-004----) and seven architectural fragments including the jambs and two parts of an ogee-headed window. A possible cross-slab stands to the S of the church (ME049-004003-) and immediately E of the entrance in the S wall of the graveyard, is a carved stone, possible the remains of a wall monument (ME049-004002-). • ME049-004002 Wall monument
  Description

  This carved stone is set on the ground and just inside the boundary wall immediately E of the entrance to Gallow graveyard (ME049-004001-). It is trapezoidal in profile and measures 0.67m L at the base 0.125 at the top and is 0.31m H: its thickness varies from 0.15m to 0.2m. The top of the stone has a small projecting tenon (85mm x 35mm and 20mm H) and this clearly was intended to fit into the mortise of some additional feature, possibly a cross. The stone, as currently positioned, is carved on the W face: the E face, or back, is not dressed in any significant manner and, inasmuch as the stone varies in thickness, it does not seem likely that it was originally intended for this face to be visible. Rather, it is possible that it was set into a wall or formed part of a wall-monument. The original province of the stone is unknown and it more than likely came from the church (ME049-004----). The W face of the stone is divided into three panels with false relief carving. The central vertical panel corresponds in width with the top of the trapezoid. It bears a fine carving of the seated figure of Christ who is shown bound and is accompanied by various crucifixion symbols (hammer, nails, ladder and spear). This scene is flanked on either side by two triangular panels each of which contains a winged robed figure – clearly angels – holding stylized palm branches in each hand, the stems of which curve beneath them in the manner of a skipping rope; possibly based on Revelations (7:9) where reference is made to angels and multitudes wearing white robes holding palm branches in their hands. The top and bottom corners of these panes contain stylized bunches of grapes (top) and vine-leaf motifs (bottom) arranged in a triketra formation. While these motifs would fit well within the canon of late-16th century sculpture the angelic figures are more 17th century in character: a date in this region would not be incompatible with the evidence.   Description

  This, the lower portion of a cross-slab, stands 6.6m S of the church (ME049-004----) in Gallow graveyard (ME049-004001-). The stone leans to the east, measures 0.24m wide by 0.10m thick and, if erect, would be 0.75m high. The E face is carved with the lower part of a cross shaft (height 0.15m) with a T-shaped terminal. • ME049-006 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Located on a gentle SW-facing slope. This is a raised and circular but overgrown area (diam. 21m N-S; 21m E-W) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (Wth of base 6.8-10m; int. H 0.6-0.7m; ext. H 1.5m) and an external flat-bottomed fosse (Wth of top 5.8-6.6m; Wth of base 3-3.5m; ext. D 0.5-0.6m). There is an entrance (Wth of base 2.8m) at ESE. A large part of the bank has been removed at S-SW and the fosse has been widened into a water-hole S-WSW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987).
