• ME044-001 Church
  Description

  Located towards the top of the NE-facing slope of a low NW-SE ridge. A church at Cnockmark is listed in the ecclesiastical taxation (1302-06) of Pope Nicholas IV (Cal. doc. Ire., 5, 255). Ussher (1622) records the church and chancel of Knockmake as decayed (Erlington 1847-64, 1, lxxv). According to Dopping's visitation (1682-5) the church of St Peter and its chancel were unrepaired since 1641 and the graveyard was not enclosed (Ellison 1972, 4). A Church of Ireland church was built in 1811 (Lewis 1837, 239-40) but it was defunct by the end of the century (1909 OS 6-inch map), and only its W tower with a spire survives. The site of the medieval parish church is within a D-shaped graveyard (max. dims c. 90m WNW-ESE; c. 50m NNE-SSW) defined by masonry walls with the straight sides at W and S and a road curving around the perimeter NW-E-ESE. The headstones date from c. 1780 to the present. There is no visible evidence of the medieval church, apart from a coffin-shaped graveslab (H 0.7m; Wth 0.23-0.32m; T 0.1-0.15m) set up as a headstone, which has a bracelet-headed cross together with a sword carved in low relief on the E face. A font, which is described (Davidson 1895) as an octagonal but broken piece of limestone ‘1 foot 10 inches wide (c. 0.56m)’ with an octagonal stem ‘1 foot 3 inches (c. 0.38m)’ in height and ‘1 foot 4 inches (c. 0.4m)’ wide at the top that had a moulding at the waist is no longer present in the graveyard. Each side of the basin had a socket for securing the cover. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987).   Description

  Located towards the top of the NE-facing slope of a low NW-SE ridge. The site of the medieval church of Knockmark (ME044-001----) is within a D-shaped graveyard (max. dims c. 90m WNW-ESE; c. 50m NNE-SSW) defined by masonry walls, with the straight sides at W and S and a road curving around the perimeter NW-E-ESE. • ME044-002 Mound
  Description

  Situated on a gentle N-facing slope. It is depicted as an oval feature and described as ‘Knockmark Moat’ on the 1836 and 1908 editions of the OS 6-inch map. This is a circular grass-covered earthen mound (diam. of base 14.4m E-W; 13.5m N-S; H 1.6m at S to 2.2m at NW) with some deciduous trees. It is within and towards the SE edge of an oval enclosure (dims 64m NW-SE; 32m NE-SW) defined by a slight scarp but with a large oval or crescent-shaped mound (L 24m NE-SW; Wth 16m NW-SE; H 2-2.4m) on the perimeter SE-S. The large enclosure is probably a tree-ring and the mound on the perimeter may be natural. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). • ME044-031 Barrow - embanked barrow
  Description

  Located on a slight NE-facing slope. This monument is not depicted on any map but it can be seen on Google Earth (05/10/2009). It is a subcircular grass-covered area (dims 24m N-S; 21m E-W; int. diam. c. 10m) defined by a wide earthen bank (at N: Wth of base 15m; int. H 0.5; ext. H 0.6m) which is reduced to an external scarp (H 0.5m) at S. There is no visible fosse or entrance (ext. dim. 35m E-W). Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 22 November 2021

• ME044-036 Burnt mound
  Description

  Situated at the lowest point of a fairly level landscape. Topsoil stripping (02E0194) in advance of a gas pipeline identified two spreads of burnt stone (BGE: 1A/21/1) but they were inadvertently damaged and one destroyed before the monument was completely excavated (02E0633). It consisted of a mound of heat-shattered material (dims 5.4m NE-SW; 5.2m NW-SE; max. D 0.2m). The only artefact recovered was a flint knife from the surface during monitoring. • ME044-046 Barrow - ring-barrow
  Description

  Situated on a slight E-facing slope in a low-lying landscape, with a SE-NW section of the River Skane c. 100m to the NE. This feature is most clearly visible on Apple Maps but can also be seen on Google Earth (24/03/2012; 07/05/2017; 14/05/2020) and OSI aerial images. A small circular grass-covered mound (diam. c. 5m) is separated by a fosse from an outer bank (ext. diam. c. 15m). There is a tree on the bank at SW, and the monument was first reported by Jean Charles Caillére. • ME044-048 Excavation - miscellaneous
  Description

  Situated on a fairly level landscape with a canalised NW-SE stream just to the W. Archaeological centre-line testing (04E0482) by T. O’Neill of Testing Area 20 of Contract 1 prior to the construction of the M3 motorway and its feeders identified archaeological features (excavations.ie: 2004:1278) that were excavated (E003050) by H. Schweitzer as Knockmark 1 in April-May 2006 (excavations.ie 2006:1596). A possible cremation pit was identified as an oval area (dims 2.12m x 1.72m; T 0.13m) with two fills of grey or black clayey silts with charcoal flecks and burnt bone, but an oxidized surface is not present. In addition there were three spreads (dims 1.45m x 0.22m; D 0.08m: 1.4m x 0.3m; D 0.08m: 1.62m x 1.05m; D 0.09m) of grey sandy clays with frequent burnt bone and charcoal inclusions which can be interpreted as cremation deposits, one of which produced a C14 date of 380-160 cal. BC. There was also an oval hearth (dims 1.32m x 0.97m) with a fire-reddened base, and two oval pits (dims 2.2m x 1.1m; D 0.12m: 1.83m x 1.2m; D 0.11m) together with three post-holes are nearby. Six other pits of similar dimensions and fills with ash and charcoal inclusions are at a greater distance from the hearth. A sample of hazel charcoal from one of the pits produced a C14 date of 2300-2050 cal. BC. These features were distributed amongst 25 tree boles which were irregularly-shaped spreads of clay in the subsoil with evidence of tree roots and incorporating a flint flake as well as animal bones and charcoal flecks. The area was cut by numerous drains and other late linear features, but flint and chert artefacts were recovered from the topsoil. (Schweitzer and Ginn 2008)

  Detached square-profile three-stage tower with ashlar spire and pinnacles, built 1830, formerly part of a church. Rubble limestone walls with limestone ashlar corner buttresses and string courses. Pointed arch openings with ashlar limestone surrounds and hood mouldings. Graveyard to site. Ashlar limestone gates piers with wrought-iron double gates set in rubble stone walls.
