• ME048-002 Church
  Description

  Situated on a hillock with a small SE-NW stream c. 100m to the NE. Ussher (1622) describes the church and chancel of Rathcoure as ruined, and he lists it as a chapel-of-ease to Trim (Erlington 1847-64, 1, lxxiii). According to Dopping's Visitation Book (1682-85) St Ultan’s church at Rathcore was a chapel-of-ease to St Patrick’s in Trim (ME036-048012-), and the graveyard was not enclosed. At that time the church was in disrepair, but the chancel ’37 feet by 21 (c. 11.3m x c. 6.4m)’ was in better shape although still unusable (Ellison 1972, 9). The present Church of Ireland church was built c. 1800, and is within a subrectangular graveyard (dims c. 68m NW-SE; c. 57m NE-SW) defined by masonry walls and hedges, with headstones dating largely from c. 1780 to the present. There is no evidence of the older church but two stones re-used as grave-markers (H 0.18m; H 0.17m) might be from a door-frame of the medieval church. The octagonal font (ext. dims 0.58m; H 0.42m) with a circular basin (int. diam. D 0.2m) and chamfered under-panels described by Roe (1968, 126) is now kept in the church porch. A fragment of a headstone (Wth 0.2m; H 0.37m; T 5cm) has the incised date 1690 or 1660, and an incised double-line cross. A disc-headed cross (dims 0.12m x 0.11m; H 0.38m; span 0.28m) in the graveyard has the date 161(2?) and what might be the letters ‘DRD’ in relief on one face.   Description

  Situated on a hillock with a small SE-NW stream and St Ultan's well (ME048-026----) c. 100m to the NE. The site of the parish church of Rathcore (ME048-002----) is within a subrectangular graveyard (dims c. 68m NW-SE; c. 57m NE-SW) defined by masonry walls and hedges, but according to the Dopping visitation (1682-5) it was not enclosed in the late 17th century (Ellison 1972, 9). The font (ME048-002002-) which was in the graveyard (Roe 1968, 126) is now kept in the porch of the Church of Ireland church. The headstones date largely from c. 1780 to the present, but one has a 17th century date (ME048-002004-), and the cross (ME048-002003-) is also in the graveyard.   Description

  In the graveyard associated with the site of the parish church of Rathcore (ME048-002----) and S of the W end of the present Church of Ireland church is a fragment of a headstone (Wth 0.2m; H 0.37m; T 5cm) that has the incised date 1690 or 1660 preceded by fragments of an inscription: ..SOW../..PAGEP D../. • ME048-003 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated at the S edge of a low ridge in a low-lying landscape. This is a circular grass-covered area (diam. 52m NNW-SSE; 50m ENE-WSW) that slopes down to the NE-SE (H 1-2m). It is defined by an earthen bank (Wth of base 5-6m; int. H 0.3m at NE to 0.8m at SW) and hedge with an outer fosse (Wth of top 7-9m; Wth of base 3-m; ext. D 0.3-0.8m). There is an outer bank (Wth of base 4m; ext. H 0.4m) ESE-SSW only. There is a wide gap in the inner bank at ESE but a partly stone-lined entrance (Wth of base 2.3m) without a causeway at NNE is more likely to be the original entrance.   Description

  Situated on a knoll in a low-lying undulating landscape with higher ridges all around. This is a raised and slightly domed (H 0.3-0.7m), grass-covered and subcircular area (dims 28m NNE-SSW; 22.7m NW-SE) defined by an earthen bank (at NW: Wth of base 5m; int. H 0.1m; ext. H 1.4m) with some bushes that is largely reduced to a scarp (at SE: Wth 3.8m; H 1.4m). There is a no visible fosse and the original entrance is not identified. • ME048-006 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a rise which is on the S-facing slope of a low W-E spur. An oval embanked enclosure is depicted only on the 1836 edition of the OS 6-inch map where it is described as a ‘Fort’. It was described in 1969 (SMR file) as a circular grass-covered area (diam. 59.5m N-S; 58m E-W) that was domed (H 1.8m to the W to 3.3m to the E and S). It is defined by a scarp (at S: Wth 10m; H 2.6m) that declines around to W and E (Wth 4m; H 0.8m) but the remnants of an earthen bank (Wth of base 8m; int. H 0.8m; ext. H 0.1m) and outer fosse (Wth of top 7m; Wth of base 3m; ext. D 0.3m) were evident at N and there were traces of the fosse at SE, SW (Wth of top 3.5m; Wth of base 2.5m; ext. D 0.35m) and NW. The original entrance was not identified. It had largely been quarried away by 2005 apart from a small part at S (OSAP).   Description

  Situated on a S-facing slope. The cropmark of a circular enclosure (diam. c. 40m) defined by a single slight fosse feature and a curve in a field bank S-SW is visible on an oblique aerial photograph (CUCAP: BDU 56). It is also visible on Google Earth (28/06/2018). • Saint Ultan's Church (Rathcore), church/chapel, 1800–1810 · Regional interest
  Description

  Gable-fronted church, dated 1806, with three-bay side elevations to nave, leading to apse to east. Porches added, c.1865, having cast-iron windows and timber doors set in openings with ashlar limestone dressings, to entrance gable and north elevation. Pitched slate roof, with limestone bellcote and cast-iron rainwater goods. Rendered walls to nave, ashlar limestone to porches. Timber tracery windows set in pointed openings with limestone sills. Ashlar limestone piers and cast-iron double gates. Graveyard to site.

• J. Boggan, house, 1800–1840 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached four-bay single-storey thatched house, built c.1820, now in use as public house. Single-storey porch addition to entrance elevation. Replacement timber sash windows and red brick chimneystack. Flat-roofed extension attached to rear. Remains of mud-walled outbuildings to rear.
