• MO018-043 Megalithic tomb - court tomb
  Description

  Located at the bottom of the W-facing slope of a knoll on the crest of an E-W drumlin ridge, and incorporated into the N bank of an E-W road. At ENE, two jambs surmounted by a large lintel give access to gallery (L 7.5m; Wth 1.8m). • MO018-044 Graveyard
  Description

  Situated on the E-facing slope of a hillock, which is on an E-W ridge. The site of the Roman Catholic church (MO018-044001-) is at the NE angle of a subrectangular graveyard (dims c. 60m NW-SE; c. 28m NE-SW at SE to c. 50m NE-SW) defined by stone-faced scarps with hedges on all sides except the SE where a masonry wall borders a road. The headstones date generally from 1724 to about 1945 but there is no evidence of a headstone to the Dowd family dated 1574 which was found in 1898 (McKenna 1920, 1, 559). The gravestone (MO018-044002-) of two Catholic archbishops of Armagh, the brothers Bernard and Ross McMahon, dated 1750, is close to the path at the base of the slope (Rushe 1916, 21-4). • MO018-044001 Church
  Description

  Situated on the E-facing slope of a hillock, which is on an E-W ridge. During the Middle Ages Galloon was a large parish, which was only broken up in 1806 (Shirley 1879, 327) when the parishes of Killeevan, Aghabog, Currin, and Ematris, also known as Edergole, were established in Co. Monaghan by the Church of Ireland. It is not known for certain how many medieval churches there may have been in the Dartry part of Galloon, and there could have been one at Edergole, of which there is no physical evidence. McKenna (1920, 1, 551-62) avers that a Roman Catholic church could have survived here, which was recorded as the mass-house of Edergole in 1744. This could be the same as the church depicted on the 1835 ed. of the OS 6-inch map at the NE edge of the graveyard and described on the map as ‘R C Church’. McKenna (ibid.) describes this as a narrow building with two doorways in the S wall. The footprint of this structure is apparent as a hollow (Wth of top 8.5m NW-SE; Wth of base 5.8m NW-SE; D c. 0.5-0.6m; L c. 5m NE-SW) at the base of the slope at E, but a piece of dressed limestone (L 0.60m; H 0.23m; D 0.21.5cm) with an iron dowel at either end is unlikely to be medieval. This church is in a subrectangular graveyard (dims c. 60m NW-SE; c. 28m NE-SW at SE to c. 50m NE-SW) defined by stone-faced scarps with hedges on all sides except the SE where a masonry wall borders a road. • MO018-044002 Graveslab
  Description

  Located at the bottom of the slope and on the W side of the path in Edergole graveyard (MO018-044----). In 1714, at the height of the Penal Laws, Hugh McMahon (died 1737), Roman Catholic bishop of Clogher, was translated to Armagh and the Primacy of Ireland. He was succeeded at both Clogher and Armagh by his nephews, the brothers Bernard (died 1747) and Ross (died 1748) McMahon. The brothers are buried under a graveslab (dims 1.96m x 1.08m; T 0.15m) with a Latin inscription. It is inscribed in roman capitals beneath an elaborate but very worn crest that has a crown above it to the left and two mitres above it to the right. The inscription was transcribed in 1852 by Shirley (1879, 330) as: HIC IACET BERNARDVS ET ROCHVS / MAC – MAHON FRATRES GERMANI U / TERQUE SUCCESSIVE EPISCOPUS CLOG / HIRENSIS UTERQUE ETIAM SUCESIV / E ARCH-ARMACANUS TOTS HIBN. PRIM / ATI QUORUM NOBLISIMI GENERIS / MEMOR PIETAS ATQUAE AEMULA DOC / TRINA VITAQUE TIULAS NON IM / PAR MOERENTEM PATRIAM DECO / RAVERE. BERNARDUS OBIT DIE 27 / MAII 1747. AETAT 67. ROCHUS DIE 29 OCT 1748. AETAT 49 / AMBO PARES VIRTUTE / PARES ET HORORIBUS AMBO. / This monument was erected / by Mr. Roger Mahon bro. to the / deceased primates anno. Dom. 1750. McKenna (1920, 1, 562) translates this as: Here lie Bernard and Ross MacMahon, brothers, each in succession Bishop of Clogher, each also, in succession Archbishop of Armagh, Primates of All Ireland, whose noble origin, profound piety, extensive learning, and edifying lives have shed a lustre round their disconsolate country.
