Description
Detached three-bay two-storey L-plan house, built c.1890, having projecting west end bay, porch recessed to re-entrant corner, and single-bay two-storey addition to middle bay of rear. Hipped natural slate roof with terracotta ridge-tiles, polychromatic chimneystacks with stepped copings and terracotta pots, and cast-iron rainwater goods, flat roofs to porch and to addition, with parapet to former and water tank to latter with metal sheeting. Roughcast rendered walls with smooth-rendered plinth, smooth-rendered ruled-and-lined walls to porch, smooth-rendered block-and-start quoins to addition. Square-headed window openings with rendered patent reveals, two-over-two pane horned timber sliding sash windows, and limestone sills. Depressed arch to front door opening with paned timber side-lights, overlight, and timber panelled door. Set within own grounds with courtyard to rear enclosed by roughcast rendered wall with concrete coping. Gateway to south comprising steel gates mounted on timber gate piers.

Description
Detached irregular L-plan two-storey over basement house, built c.1840 and extended c.1890, and having essentially four-bay elevations to front, rear and south-east, and five-bay elevation to north-west. Entrance in south-west elevation, in slightly lower one-bay block to re-entrant corner. One canted bay window to each elevation, except rear. Flight of steps up to doorways in front and rear elevations, latter entrance having gable-fronted openwork rustic-style porch. Hipped natural slate roof with grey clayware ridge-tiles, red brick chimneystacks with string courses and stepped dentillated copings and terracotta pots, and cast-iron rainwater goods. Roughcast rendered walls with tooled sandstone block-and-start quoins. Square-headed window openings with one-over-one pane horned timber sliding sash windows and stone sills, margined one-over-two pane round-headed stair-light window to rear. Iron window grills to basement. Segmental-headed main doorway with torus-moulded red brick block-and-start surround and red brick voussoirs, double-leaf timber panelled door with rusticated panels, and decorative fanlight. Parapets to front steps and to garden boundary wall to front of house are of intricately carved stonework. Set within own grounds with mature trees surrounding. Former gateway to south-west, comprising decorative cast-iron square-plan piers and decorative wrought-iron double-leaf gate.

Description
Single-arch limestone railway bridge, built c.1870, carrying road over disused Great Northern Railway line. Rock-faced ashlar coursed walls and curving abutments with dressed string course, elliptical arch with rock-faced voussoirs and dressed string course and having English garden wall bond red brick soffit. Dressed ashlar coursing to parapet walls and copings. Dumping of earth and rubble partly blocks west elevation. Sited to north-west of Monaghan town.

Description
Detached ten-bay two-storey former infantry barracks, built c.1800, dated 1914, with asymmetrical four-bay centrepiece having central carriage archway flanked by slightly projecting turret-like bays each side. Now subdivided into housing. Hipped slate roof to front pitch, recent artificial slate to rear, grey clayware ridge-tiles, red brick chimneystacks with terracotta pots, and cast-iron rainwater goods. Centrepiece has dentillated eaves course, pediment over archway, dressed limestone copings to pediment and flanking bays. Squared coursed limestone walls with tooled ashlar block-and-start quoins. Limestone plaque inscribed 'BELGIAN SQUARE 1914' over archway. Roughcast rendered walls to end elevations. Square-headed window openings with painted dressed stone surrounds and sills. Pointed and square-headed blank window openings to east bay of centrepiece. Replacement windows throughout. Flat-headed door openings with painted tooled dressed stone surrounds with quadrilateral keystones. Replacement doors throughout. Tudor arch to carriageway with tooled dressed stone surround and soffit, timber lintel on tooled dressed stone brackets corbels to inner side, with portcullis-style timber feature over opening. Fronts directly onto street with yard to rear divided into domestic yards. Further barracks building to rear.

Now forming terrace of four houses, with gablets to front elevation, and central archway giving access to courtyard to rear. Hipped slate roof to front pitch, replacement artificial slate to rear, grey clayware ridge-tiles, red brick chimneystacks with terracotta pots, cast-iron rainwater goods, and with timber bargeboards to gablets. Random rubble limestone walls with tooled ashlar block-and-start quoins. Camber arch window openings to ground floor, with red brick block-and-start surrounds, and painted sills. Square-headed window openings with tooled ashlar block-and-start surrounds to first floor. Replacement windows throughout. Oculus opening to first floor of central bay, over entrance archway, with smooth-rendered brick surround, and keystone. Full-height round arch entrance to rear elevation, with dressed limestone block-and-start surround and keystone. Set back from street with former yard divided into domestic yards to rear; principal building to barracks directly to south east enclosing courtyard.

Description
Detached seven-bay two-storey former workhouse entrance block, dated 1841, with dormer floor having gablets to front elevation, and gabled two-storey returns to rear. Now divided and in use as flats. Pitched natural slate roof with grey clayware ridge tiles, smooth-rendered chimneystacks, replacement rainwater goods, decoratively carved timber bargeboards to gables and gablets. Coursed squared limestone rubble walls with block-and-start quoins, chamfered plinth, and moulded string course to front elevation between floors and rising over former entrance doorway. Datestone in form of shield inscribed 'A.D. 1841', to entrance bay. Smooth-rendered walls to rear elevation. Square-headed window openings with chamfered tooled limestone block-and-start surrounds. Square-headed windows to ground floor flanking entrance. Replacement uPVC windows throughout. Tudor arch former entrance doorway to central bay, with chamfered tooled limestone block-and-start surround, now partly blocked to window. Later square-headed door openings to front elevation with replacement fittings. Ruins of further structures to north. Set within own grounds on elevated site to north-east of Monaghan Town centre. Parkland to front (south) of building.

Description
Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c.1910, with bowed bay windows to ground floor front, and single-bay two-storey return to rear. Hipped natural slate roof with terracotta ridge-tiles, projecting eaves course with exposed timber rafters, central paired red brick chimneystacks with stepped copings and terracotta pots, and cast-iron rainwater goods. Flat roofs to bow windows. Flat roof to return concealed by parapet. Red brick walls laid in stretcher bond. Segmental-arch window openings to first floor front, paired to end bays and double to gables, and square-headed elsewhere, all with replacement windows, and painted sills. Elliptical arch doorway with chamfered red brick surround and replacement timber panelled door with sidelights and overlights. Set within own grounds, with lawns and trees to front, bounded by brick walls with metal railings, and double-leaf metal gate to brick piers. Two-storey outbuilding to rear with monopitch roof and smooth rendered walls. Random rubble wall to rear of site.
- Monaghan Railway Station, railway station, 1860–1865 · Regional interest
Description
Single-storey railway station building, built 1863, to designs by John MacNeill, with projecting arcaded five-bay central entrance block flanked by lower nine-bay ranges to each side, single-pitch single-bay units to each end, porch towards east end of east range reached by flight of steps, and large late twentieth-century warehouse to rear, north, elevation in place of former railway line and platform. Hipped slate roof with black clay ridge tiles to side ranges, with roof of central entrance block concealed behind brick parapet wall. Chimneystacks with stepped, over-sailing brick detailing and corbels supporting cap, half-round cast-iron rainwater goods held on overhanging eaves which act as cornice supported by series of paired carved stone brackets. Muted polychrome Flemish-bonded brick walls with pale, creamy brick used for decorations such as projecting string course holding cornice brackets, keystones to window heads, continuous impost moulding to side ranges as well as brick piers and archivolts to five-bay arcade on main entrance block. Entrance block has brick parapet incorporating simple, low brick pediments to front and sides. Windows set into round-headed recessed openings to side ranges and end bays of entrance block. Margined round-headed timber frames to west range with top-opening panes, square-headed two-over-two pane timber sliding sash frames to east range with ogee horns and blank fanlights. Entrance block end bays have windows of similar type to respective adjacent blocks, although east end bay has twelve-over-twelve pane frame. Central open arches to entrance block, accessed by wide finely cut limestone steps with low cast-iron railings to either side. Interior provides covered area where central window and access to station platform, station master’s house and other rooms were entered through double-leaf timber panelled doors with glazing to upper panels and round-headed fanlights in recessed brick-framed doorcases. Porch to east end of facade accessed by smooth rendered staircase. End single-pitched unit to east encloses small yard within brick boundary wall. Similar flat-roof bay to west end has lost cornice. Blocked arched openings of north elevation of station extant inside warehouse at north side as is roofless structure which may be signal box visible in 1907 photograph. Station fronts onto North Road with small sloped garden area in front of side ranges and enclosed by low brick walls at each end.

Description
Detached gable-fronted five-bay single-storey former railway goods shed, built c.1860, with lower two-bay single-storey projections to long elevations, now in use as retail unit. Pitched corrugated-iron roofs with stone copings, projecting skew-blocks, stone eaves-course, and replacement rainwater goods. Coursed squared rock-faced limestone walls, having square rock-faced surrounds to openings with margins. Oculi with dressed surrounds to upper gables, depressed-arch headed recesses in arcade style to side elevations with rock-faced imposts, windows now blocked up, and square-headed panels to pilaster-like piers. Round-headed window openings to gable elevations having timber casement windows, blind openings to end bays. Round-arch door openings to gable elevations having timber glazed door to west opening, double-leaf hinged battened timber doors to east. Set within grounds of former railway goods yard.

Description
Detached irregular-plan three-storey former police barracks, built 1875, having four-bay front elevation, western two bays projecting and gable-fronted, with gabled porch to front, and other elevations being essentially three-bay. Now in use as council offices. Pitched natural slate roof to north section, hipped front block, with grey clay ware ridge tiles, dressed sandstone shouldered chimneystacks that project from top of wall faces, with sloped copings and terracotta pots, projecting rafters with timber brackets to eaves, timber bargeboards to gables with moulded brackets, cast-iron profile guttering and rainwater goods to fascias supported on carved timber brackets. Roughcast rendered walls with painted block-and-start quoins to margins, and painted projecting sandstone plinth with sloped coping. Painted ashlar sandstone block-and-start surrounds with chamfered margins to all openings. Tudor-arch window openings with six-over-six pane horned timber sliding sash windows, and square-headed door opening with timber panelled doors. Set within own grounds with tarmacadam-surfaced car park surrounding. Low rubble boundary wall to west. Converted two-storey outbuilding to rear having pitched slate roof and random rubble walls.
