• OF006-079001 Post row - peatland
  Description

  The site (L 2.91m min.; Wth 2.03m; D 0.53m) is orientated SE-NW and composed of a row of fifty-two posts (L 0.10-0.53m; diam.0.068-0.113m) and stakes (diam.0.026-0.055m) with haphazardly spread horizontals elements along the N side of the alignment. The uprights are predominantly hazel with a single oak example and are irregularly spaced (0.03-0.032m) at angles of 30-90°. The horizontal wood is predominantly birch, hazel and oak brushwood in poor condition with a single piece of outer tangential split oak. The uprights are well preserved and the ends cut to wedge and chisel points with distinctive concave facets (Wth 0.055; D 0.0045). One post displayed two different sets of tool signatures indicating the use of more than one tool. This site may be associated with either SMR OF006-079002- or its neighbour SMR OF006-079003- both within a 20m distance of it. • OF006-079002 Post row - peatland
  Description

  A linear arrangement of 37 posts and stakes (L 10m min; Wth 1.6m; D 1.14m) orientated ESE-WNW. The uprights are set at angle of 45-90° and at its widest the row is six posts across. Most of the wood is hazel (diam. 0.061-0.105m) but two pieces of birch were noted (diam. 0.039-0.059m). Post and stake (L 0.183-1.14m) ends are worked into chisel, wedge and the occasional pencil points with distinctively concave facets. Some degraded brushwood of ash, birch and hazel occurred between the uprights and grains of sand were present on the tips of several posts. Branch trimming was noted on a number of posts and the wood is generally in good condition with bark surviving. • OF006-079003 Road - class 3 togher
  Description

  The site (L 10m; Wth 2.5m; D 0.23m) is orientated SE-NW and composed of longitudinal roundwoods (diam. 0.075m max.) and brushwood (diam. 0.006-0.057m) up to six layers in depth. Most of the wood is birch with some hazel, oak and ash and a single birch half-split was recorded. A linear arrangement of thirty-one posts and stakes secures the S edge of the site. These occur singly, in pairs, in groups of three and in small clusters inserted into the peat at angles of 45-85° and the interval between post clusters averages 0.2m. The uprights (L 0.17-0.69m; diam. 0.03-0.85m) are predominantly hazel with some birch and oak and the ends were finished into chisel and wedge points. Several distinctly concave tool signatures were recorded indicating that at least two posts were trimmed with the same blade (Wth 0.049m; D 0.004m). The structure is somewhat less compact along its N side with several oblique and transverse timbers extending beyond the edge of the site including an oak outer tangential split with burnt upper and lower surfaces. Three large posts also occurred along this side of the structure and a small number of hazelnuts were also noted. This site, or its neighbour SMR OF006-079002-, may be associated with SMR OF006-079001-. Radiocarbon dated to 1682-1448 cal. BC (GrN-21259).   Description

  The site (Wth 0.41m; D 0.1m) is orientated NE-SW. It consists of a single layer of seven predominantly oak roundwoods (av. diam. 0.06m) and oak and birch brushwood (diam. 0.02-0.045m) with occasional outlying pieces of brushwood. The wood is generally in poor condition probably indicating that the site was exposed for some time before being enveloped by peat.   Description

  A single outer tangential split of oak (L 1.11m; diam. 0.16m) with the split surface uppermost. One end was exposed in the drain face and had been damaged by milling. The other end was embedded in peat and was heavily charred. Recorded by the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (University College, Dublin) in 1993.   Description

  The site (Wth 2.1m; D 0.2m) is orientated ENE-WSW and consists of an irregular deposits of wood. The superstructure is composed of longitudinal roundwoods (diam. 0.06-0.068m) and half-split oak timbers supported by a substructure of oak transverses and assorted hazel and ash brushwood (diam. 018-0.057m). A number of pegs, one of which was hazel, were inserted into the peat along the S side of the structure. The ends are worked into pencil and chisel points with distinctively concave toolmarks.   Description

  The site (L 2.3m min.; Wth 1.9m) is orientated SSE-NNW and composed of an irregular arrangement of birch and hazel roundwoods and brushwood (diam. 0.013-0.065m). The wood is more dispersed towards the edges. Roundwoods and brushwood are laid in a criss-cross fashion at the centre of the site. The upper wood is fragmentary and in poor condition while the lower elements are well preserved. Several pencil point ends were recorded as well as a half-split roundwood of hazel.
