• OF008-017 Children's burial ground
  Description

  Located on flat land in area of undulating countryside. Rectangular shaped earthen platform (dims. N-S 19m; E-W 30m and varies in ext. height from 0.5m to 1m defined by a scarp). The platform slopes from E to W and there are some small protruding stones in the E sector of the platform which could be possible grave-markers. According to the ITA Survey (1942) the site was used a burial ground for still-born infants. The following folklore was recorded from Clara School in 1935-9 about this burial ground; 'Old Peter calls Kilcromeen Kilcuitin. I have seen it. It is not fenced off from the field in which it is situated but as it has never been cultivated it is easily seen. It is in John Sheridan's land. Sheridan told me on one had been buried in it since he bought the land years ago. Old Peter said a child from Clashawaun was buried in it 5 years ago. The graveyard space is square, the surface rought and bumpy, with smallish rough stones here and there. I have also heard the same place referred to as Cillalugán. The is a place in the monastery graveyard now for unbaptised babies. There was a graveyard in Tommy Flattery's garden. It "stopped" when Monastery opened. Old Peter "met" a couple of tombstones when working in Tommy's garden' ( The Schools’ Collection, Volume 0807, Page 446) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997).   Description

  Not visible at ground level. Not marked on any edition of the OS 6-inch map, identified as a potential destroyed monument which was pencilled in as a circular feature on the 1838 ed. OS 6-inch map (ASI file) 1977). Described in 1977 as, 'this earthwork has been destroyed. It was set on a low narrow ridge in undulating land' (SMR File 1977). This monument was not indicated as an antiquity on any edition of the OS 6-inch maps and there is no definite evidence that there was ever an archaeological monument at this location. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997).   Located on flat marshy land there was no surface evidence of any archaeological site in area marked on aerial photographs taken in 1973 (GSI N 557/6). Unlikely location for an archaeological site may have been a natural feature which showed up on the photograph.   Cast-iron water pump, c.1880, with banded shaft, decorative moulding to neck and spout, fluted cap with finial and cow's tail handle. Foundry stamp to neck reads: 'P. Murray, Drogheda'. Cut limestone basin to front. Located to road side.

  Description

  Semi-detached four-bay single-storey house, built c.1880, with adjoining garage. Set back from road. Shallow segmental felt roof with rendered chimneystacks and terracotta pots. Rendered walls with timber eaves board. Replacement timber casement windows with painted sills. Round-headed door opening with timber and glazed door and fanlight within segmental-roofed projecting porch. Site bounded to front by plinth wall with tooled limestone coping and cast-iron piers and gate. Ashlar gate piers with wrought-iron vehicular gates.

  Semi-detached four-bay single-storey house, built c.1880, with porch to front. Set back from road. Shallow segmental felt roof with rendered chimneystacks with terracotta pots. Rendered walls with timber eaves boards. Replacement uPVC windows with painted sills. Square-headed door opening with replacement uPVC door. Timber battened gates to rear site. Site bounded to front by rendered plinth wall with wrought-iron railings and gates.

  Description

  Pair of semi-detached and one detached three-bay two-storey houses, built c.1875. Fronting directly onto street. Pitched slate and artificial slate roof. Rendered and red brick chimneystacks. Exposed timber eaves. Rendered and pebbledashed walls with square-headed window openings and single-pane timber sash windows. Round-headed door opening.

• Clashawaun Works, mill (tread), 1870–1880 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached multiple-bay single-storey former spinning section of the jute factory, built between 1865 and 1873, with two-storey warehouses to rear. Roof behind limestone parapet to front and pitched roofs to rear. Random coursed stone walls, with red brick surrounds to window and door openings. Limestone quoins. Segmental-headed window openings with timber sash windows. Central carriage arch with limestone quoins and 'Clashawaun Works 1873' carved into the keystone.

  Wall-mounted cast-iron post box, c.1905, with ER VII royal cipher and crown motif. Maker’s mark ‘W.T. Allen & Co. London’ to base. Set in random coursed wall of factory complex.

  Detached multiple-bay single- and two-storey former weaving works section of the jute factory, built between 1865 and 1873. Pitched corrugated-iron roof. Rendered walls. Timber sash windows. Square-headed door and window openings. Three-bay two-storey section set behind cast-iron railings with red brick surrounds to segmental-headed door and window openings. Single-sotey section with paired sash windows. Gable-fronted section. Cylindrical chimney at end erected in 1884.
