• OF008-010 Cross - Termon cross
  Description

  No evidence of any cross in the area marked on the 6 inch OS 6-inch map. This cross has long since dissappeared as Davies recalls in the ITA survey of 1942. Described in 1942 as 'Ths site of the cross, which has disappeared was at or close to the boundary of Kilbride Td. The road from Clara to Kilbride was sunk deep through the hill at the famine time, and the cross may then have disappeared. A small mound (OF008-057) on the S side of road has some superstitions attached, but the site was probably on N side, as shown on OS The tradition of the cross is preserved in that funerals to Kilbride stop at this point on the road' (ITA Survey 1942).   Description

  From aerial photographs taken in 1966 (BKS 78882/1; OSO 3010094) this site appears to be of archaeological importance however from the ground this site appears to be a natural hilltop of no archaeological importance. There are no indications of any fosse or bank enclosing the mound. • OF008-016 Castle - tower house
  Description

  Located on top of a hill with good extensive views in all directions. The hill is steeply sloped at S which may have acted as a natural form of defence for the castle. The tower house is built of roughly coursed limestone rubble and was originally three storeys high however the second floor is now destroyed with evidence of a wall walk surviving at NE corner. The bawn wall (OF008-016001-) runs from the SW corner in a W direction and rejoins the Tower house on its NE corner thus defending the original doorway which is now destroyed but was located at the centre of the N wall. This destroyed doorway gave access to the ground floor (int. dims. 5.5m N-S by 4m E-W, wall T 1.15m) with attic which had a barrel vaulted roof. The wooden floor of this attic measured 1.95m above ground floor level. First floor accessed by mural stairs in the N wall (Wth 0.6m). This stairways leads up to the NE corner of the first floor (int. dims. 5m by 5m) which was well lit by a large destroyed window at the E end of the S wall. There are several musket loops present on the S and W walls. Access to the stairs is through a destroyed door on the NW corner of the first floor which leads to the destroyed second floor which had a door in its NE corner. The ground floor with attic above was probably the storage area with the first and second floors being the main living area. The first floor had a wooden roof with evidence of stone corbels on the W wall located 2m above floor level. The musket loops at ground floor were located on the S and E walls which indicates that these walls were not protected by a bawn wall.   Description

  Description

  No surface remains of any enclosure visible inthe area marked on the aerial photograph taken in 1981 (OSO 3010092/3010094). This field is used as a jumping ground for horses. Archaeological testing under licence no. 03E0325 was carried out as part of the planning schedule for a single house development at Kilcoursey, Clara, adjacent to an enclosure (SMR 8:19). Trenches were excavated by mechanical digger at the house site, entrance and percolation area. No features or finds of archaeological significance were revealed (Excavations Bulletin 2003).   Description

  The slight remains of a ditch survive in the area marked on the aerial photograph taken in 1981 (OSO 3010094), however it is poorly preserved and is impossible to follow. It is located in an area of poorly drained soils and may have something to do with field drainage. It is an unlikely location for an archaeological site.   Detached former Roman Catholic church, built in 1785, with two-stage square-profiled castellated towers and modern single-storey flat-roofed entrance extension to western gable, two-storey return to east, built in 1815, and lean-to bay to south elevation of nave. Set to road side. Now used as a parish hall. Pitched tiled roof with terracotta ridge tiles, metal roof vents and stone coping to gable. Stone cross finial to western gable. Tooled stone and rendered plinth to pebbledashed walls. Inscribed stone plaque to return reads: 'This Return Erected By James Kelly Esq., A.D. 1815'. Four-centre arched window openings to nave and west elevation of return with timber tracery windows and limestone sills. Four-centre arched window opening to western gable with timber tracery and tooled limestone hoodmoulding. Square-headed window openings with tooled limestone surround and limestone hoodmouldings and cusped triple-light windows to towers and return. Square-headed window openings to flat-roofed extension to west with uPVC windows. Projecting castellated ashlar limestone entrance bay to south elevation of eastern extension with Tudor arched door opening with timber panelled door surmounted by carved recessed cross.

Sold, 1934, to accommodate use as parochial house. Set within its own grounds. Hipped slate roof with terracotta ridge tiles, rendered chimneystacks, open eaves and cast-iron rainwater goods. Rendered walls. Timber sash windows with tooled stone sills. Square-headed door opening to porch , flanked by blank recessed panels with double timber panelled door and stained glass overlight. Tooled limestone steps over basement to door. Two-storey stone outbuilding to west with hipped slate roof, lattice windows and round-headed door openings with timber battened doors and petal fanlights, surrounded by stone wall with ashlar gate piers and corrugated-iron gate. Brick-lined tunnel connecting outbuilding to house with cut limestone voussoirs to round-arched entrance. Walled garden with orchard to west, behind outbuildings. Site bounded to front by stone wall with cut stone coping and tooled stone gate piers with fluted dome capping and sweeping wrought-iron railings to entrance.

Segmental-headed window openings with stone sills to front elevation. Square-headed window openings also to front. Pointed-arched window with rendered surround to side elevation. Timber sash windows throughout. Pointed-arched door opening with tooled stone surround and rendered hoodmoulding. Replacement timber door with overlight and sidelights. Red and yellow brick arches to lights. Statue of Saint Mary surmounted on tooled stone corbelled plinth and flanked by pilasters to first floor. Site bounded by roughcast rendered walls with smooth plinth and stone coping. Cast- and wrought-iron gates.

Timber sash windows with metal sills. Square-headed door opening with timber battened door. Stone outbuildings with pitched slate roofs. Square-profile tooled limestone gate piers with cast-iron gates gave access to site, flanked by rendered plinth wall with limestone coping and surmounted by cast-iron railings. Site bounded by roughcast rendered wall. Stone plaque '1786' to façade of Beechmount House.

Pitched slate roof with terracotta ridge tiles, rendered chimneystacks, terracotta pots, open-bed pediments to gables, timber eaves brackets and bellcote to west. Rendered walls with limestone quoins and continuous sill courses to ground and first floors. Timber sash and Wyatt windows with moulded surrounds and limestone sills. Square-headed door opening with fanlight and sidelights and timber and glazed door set in flat-roofed limestone portico, accessed by limestone steps. Square-headed door openings to north elevation giving access to basement and first floor with wrought- and cast-iron railings. Former double-height church with six-bay nave to rear with bow to side elevation. Pitched slate roof with terracotta ridge tiles, round and square-headed window openings and round-headed entrance porch to east elevation. Plaque to north elevation. Former multiple-bay two-storey dormitory building to north-west of site. Garden buildings to west with octagonal bay to south with pointed-arched lattice windows. Single-arched bridge to site.
