• OF002-048 Burnt spread
  Description

  Testing was carried out as part of an archaeological mitigation programme associated with the N6 Kilbeggan to Athlone dual carriageway. The site was identified during testing undertaken by Yvonne Whitty of IAC Ltd in July 2005 (A016/029). The site was excavated in February 2006. Two excavation areas measuring 10m by 10m each were opened. The site consisted of a possible hearth or pit and a burnt spread. The hearth or pit was 0.38m long, 0.4m wide and 0.19m deep. The primary fill was burnt clay and the upper fill was a rich charcoal deposit. The burnt spread was 2.5m long, 1.6m wide and 0.03m deep and comprised burnt clay and charcoal.   Testing was carried out by Ellen O’Carroll of Irish Archaeological Consultancy Ltd under licence No. E2684 as part of an archaeological mitigation programme associated with the N6 Kilbeggan to Athlone dual carriageway. The site was identified during testing undertaken by Yvonne Whitty of IAC Ltd in July 2005 (A016/058). The site was excavated in March 2006. An excavation area measuring 15m by 15m was opened. The site consisted of a possible burnt spread and a series of shallow pits. The burnt spread was 9.7m long, 7m wide and 0.08m deep and contained charcoal-flecked clay and fragments of red brick. The pits were both 1m wide and 0.2m deep and contained charcoal-flecked clays. No finds were recovered during the course of the excavation (Bennett 2010, 573).   Description

  Testing was carried out by Ellen O’Carroll of Irish Archaeological Consultancy Ltd under licence No. E2681 as part of an archaeological mitigation programme associated with the N6 Kilbeggan to Athlone dual carriageway. The site was identified during testing undertaken by Yvonne Whitty of IAC Ltd in August 2005 (A016/029). The site was excavated in February 2006. An excavation area measuring 30m by 30m was opened. The site was divided into two areas (Areas A and B). Area A contained a small number of shallow burnt spreads and a possible water channel. The water channel was 9m long, a maximum of 3m wide and 0.2m deep. Area B contained a possible cereal-drying kiln and a hearth. The kiln was 1.41m long, 1m wide and 0.18m deep. The primary fill of this kiln was a charcoal deposit. The hearth was 1m in diameter and 0.13m deep and also contained a primary charcoal deposit (Bennett 2010, 573).
