- KD031-014 Church
Description
In a graveyard (KD031-014001-). According to Ronan (1941b, 96-7), the church was called 'Villa Fonti', and was he says, ‘in waste’ in 1294 according to an Ecclesiastical Taxation. The church and chancel are described as ‘ruinous' in Archbishop Bulkeley’s Visitation of Dublin, 1630 (op. cit). A ruined rectangular structure (traceable L 14.7m E-W; Wth 6.7m N-S) appears to comprise the N and S sidewalls of a medieval church built of random rubble limestone (wall T 0.9m) into which a later (18th/19th-century?) W gable wall (T 0.7m) was inserted. The E gable wall (T 0.75m) also appears to have been rebuilt. The ‘new’ structure (L 9.25m E-W) has a partially robbed out doorway (Wth 1.1m) in the W gable wall, two robbed out windows in the S sidewall, and a robbed out window and a blocked up window embrasure in the N sidewall. The E gable wall contains a round arched window incorporating some red brick and carries a bell cote. A broken font (KD031-014002-) lies in the NW corner of the overgrown interior. - KD031-014001 Graveyard
Description
At the top of a long gentle W-facing pasture slope. Contains a ruined church (KD031-014----) and a font (KD031-014002-). A well-maintained rectangular area (c. 50m E-W; c. 35m N-S) contains numerous burials, the earliest legible of which date to the 19th-century. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 07 October 2013
- KD031-014002 Font
Description
In a ruined church (KD031-014----) in a graveyard (KD031-014001-). Approximately half of a square granite font with rounded corners survives (L 0.4m; H 0.3m; D of basin 0.18m; av. Wth of rim 0.10m; drain hole diam 0.06m) Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 07 October 2013
- KD031-017 Enclosure
Description
Shown on a 1764 ‘Map of Upper Fonts Town’ by B. Scale (JKAS 1970, 477) as the E half of a circular enclosure, and named ‘Danesfort’. Shown again on a slightly later map (1773) by Scale (NLI 21. F. 11) as a double banked rectangular enclosure, with the W limits defined by a later field boundary, and again named ‘Danesfort’. The later depiction as rectangular may reflect the modification and use of a ringfort as a field/paddock? No visible surface traces survive. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 07 October 2013
