To facilitate these works, site levels will be raised to match existing contours & will require approximately 1.15 million tones of topsoil, subsoil, sand & gravel. These materials will be extracted from lands adjoining the established racecourse that are currently being restored from a disused sand & gravel pit to agricultural use under KCC Reg. Ref. 08/2159 & EPA Waste Licence Ref. W0254-01 (Walshestown). The permission granted under Kildare Council Ref. Ref. 08/2159 will expire in 2020. This application is seeking Permission for the continuance of the permitted restoration use of the Walshestown lands for a period of an additional 8.5 years to complete the current permission restoration works, & an additional 3.5 years to restore the additional area of extraction required for the racecourse ext works (12 years in total). All proposed restoration works are consistent with those previously permitted under KCC Ref. Ref. 08/2159. The proposed restoration works include the importation & placement of inert materials over & area of c. 40.05ha; processing of non-hazardous materials including crushing, screening, & magnetic separation using mobile machinery for the purpose of recovery & recycling of engineering materials; storage, & , continued use of all established & permitted structures, storage facilities, hardstanding, drainage infrastructure, utilities & works. Permission is also sought for a proposed maintenance & storage shed of 3,500 sq.m gross floor area to facilitate the proposed restoration use, & all ancillary development works. The proposed use will require the current waste licence ref. W0254-01 to be reviewed by the E.P.A. to facilitate these works. The proposed extraction & restoration works will involve the continuation of the Walshestown operations for a total period of 12 years. Description
Occupying the W-half of a narrow N-S valley, in wet pasture. A very long, roughly rectangular area (c. 500m N-S; c. 125m E-W) of low, earthworks consisting chiefly of small rectangular enclosures, with circular platforms in one corner. - KD024-020 Church
Description
In a graveyard (KD024-020001-), on the Naas to Glendalough pilgrimage route, with an old laneway (KD024-032----) just to the N possibly forming part of that route. Named for St. Kevin, the church was part of the parish of the dioceses of Dublin and Glendalough in 1216. It is last mentioned in a visitation report of 1609 (O’Neill 2004-5, 438). Low, poorly preserved, grass-covered walls of mortared limestone and occasional tufa (max. H. 1m) define a rectangular structure comprising a dug out nave (min. 15.8m E-W; 6.5m N-S) and a possibly later chancel (9.6m E-W; 4.2m N-S). Stands on sloping ground with two buttresses against the N wall (downslope). Three cross slabs (KD024-020002-, KD024-020003- and KD024-020004-) and fragment of a baptismal font (KD024-020005-) were recorded here in 1985 (Healy SMR file). Description
On the S edge of a narrow E-W valley, on the Naas to Glendalough pilgrimage route, with an old laneway (KD024-032----) just to the N possibly forming part of that route. Toberkevin, a holy well (KD-24-021----), lies c. 150m to the ESE. An almost square, overgrown area (c. 50m N-S; c. 50m E-W) is enclosed by a stone wall. Contains a ruined church (KD024-020----) in which three cross slabs (KD024-020002-, KD024-020003- and KD024-020004-) and fragment of a font (KD024-020005-) were recorded in 1985 (Healy SMR file). 'B' (KD024-020003-) a large tapered slab of granite slab of granite (L 1.9m; Wth 0.6-0.77m) decorated with a single shaft with ringed cross at each end, in relief. 'C' (KD024-020004-) the lower portions of a granite slab (min. L. 1.04m; max. Wth. 0.42m ), with two parallel incised lines representing the shaft of a cross. Two of the slabs, (KD024-020002- and KD024-020004-) were subsequently published (Healy 2009, 101, 104-5). Only one cross slab (KD024-020004-) was located on a 1986 visit when the interior of the church appeared to have been recently dug out (SMR file).
