Description
According to Gwynn and Hadcock (1970, 380), this is 'Domhnach-mor-maige-luadat' ("the great church of Nuadhat's plain (Maynooth)") where St Erc, a disciple of the 6th century St Senan, was bishop, and the 'Donagh' (Domhnach) element in the townland name does suggest a possible Patrician foundation. In open, gently undulating pasture immediately S of Carton Demesne, and separated from it by the Royal Canal, a railway line and road. A very poorly preserved large, roughly circular, outer enclosure (est. diam. c. 130m) is defined by a low, earthen bank (Wth 5m; H 0.25m) NE-E-S, with traces of an external fosse (Wth 7m; D 0.6m) between E and S. The enclosing elements stop at S where the site is approached and entered by an apparently contemporary, embanked roadway (Wth 6-7m; traceable ext. L 52m N-S) defined on each side by an earthen bank (Wth 3.5m; H 0.4m) which widens (Wth 8.5m) just inside the outer enclosure and runs towards to a central area (int L 28m N-S) occupied by a roughly oval-shaped graveyard (KD006-005004-) which is the original location of an ogham stone (KD006-005002-) and which contains a medieval church (KD006-005002-), and which may overlie the site of an original inner enclosure (est. diams c. 60m NW-SE; c. 45m NE-SW). There is no obvious visible surface trace of an outer enclosing element from S-W-NE, but traces may survive under the railway embankment between N and NE. The SE sector of the interior is sub-divided by a low earthen bank (Wth 4m; H 0.5m; L 36.5m NW-SE)) running between the two enclosures (CUCAP ATA028, 1967; AYR049/050, 1969; Killanin and Duignan 1967, 372). - KD006-005002 Ogham stone
Description
Discovered in 1902 by Lord Walter Fitzgerald (1903-5, 26) in the NE sector of Donaghmore graveyard (KD006-005004-), where, according to O'Hanluain (1935-45, 170), it marked an O'Farrell family grave. Macalister (1945, 130-1, no. 26) recorded the stone's dimensions (0.76 x 0.36 x 0.23m, converted from Macalister) and read the inscription as: NETTAVRECC [KOI] MAQI MUCCOI TRENALUGGO. McManus (1997, 66, 79) suggested that there was enough room for a more likely NETTAVROICC or NETTAVROECC and that Macalister's KOI was doubtful. The stone is now in the National Museum of Ireland (DU018-173----). Compiled by: Nora White Date of upload: 14 September 2016
- KD006-005003 Church
Description
In the S sector of a graveyard (KD006-005004-) on an early monastic site (KD006-005001-). The poorly preserved, ivy-clad remains of a rectangular structure built of uncoursed limestone blocks (wall T 0.9m). An account by Lord Walter Fitzgerald (1903-5, 26-28) contains a ground plan showing a nave (dims. L c. 9.9m ESE-WNW; Wth c. 5.1m) and chancel (dims. L c. 4.9m ESE-WNW; Wth c. 3.7m) with breaks in the N and S walls of the nave, and the information that the ruins were repointed in 1892 by order of the Duke of Leinster. A segmented, pointed rubble arch (Wth 2.4m; H 2.7m) of thin flagstones in the E wall of the nave gave access to the chancel which has been levelled since, and the area is now occupied by a large grave plot. The W gable of the nave is surmounted by a small bellcote and has a narrow loft light with a square head and internal splay. The interior contains numerous headstones. Displaced limestone door jambs mentioned in an earlier Fitzgerald account (1896-99, 156) were not located. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 10 June 2011
- KD006-005004 Graveyard
Description
On the higher, N end, of a short, low spur at the centre of an early monastic enclosure (KD006-005001-). A roughly oval area (diams. c. 60m NW-SE; c. 45m NE-SW) is defined by a low, overgrown, but well-built, cross-capped, mortared stone wall, inside of which a grass path runs around the perimeter. The enclosing element may follow an older, Early Christian enclosure line. Ashlar-piered gates at SW give access and the legible grave markers date from the 18th and 19th century, and are concentrated to W, N and E of the medieval church (KD006-005003-) in the S sector. An ogham stone (KD006-005002-) was found in the NE sector (CUCAP ATA028, 1967; AYR049/050, 1969). Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 10 June 2011

- KD006-009 House - 17th century
Description
The lands at Carton were owned by the Earls of Kildare and in the late-17th century were leased to the Talbot family who erected the first building, a Dutch-style house with a pedimented breakfront which is recorded in a painting by Van der Hagen (SMR file). Carton was subsequently forfeited to the Crown and sold in 1703 to Maj. Gen. Richard Ingolsby, Lord Justice of Ireland who added a two storey, nine bay pedimented front with wings joined to the main block by curved sweeps, in the Palladian manner. In 1739 the estate was sold back to the 19th Earl of Kildare who made Carton his principal seat, employing Richard Castle to enlarge the house, which work obliterated all trace of the older house except for a cornice on the entrance front and unusually thick internal walls. The house was again remodelled and enlarged c. 1815 by Sir Richard Morrison for the Kildares who had by the become the Dukes of Leinster. The great demesne, covering c. 1000 acres, was formally landscaped in the 18thC, with further improvements in the 19th century (Bence Jones 1978, 60; Horner 1975 - reference in 1976 Foras Forbartha report in SMR file). - KD006-020 Burial ground
Description
In June 2015, the National Monuments Service (NMS) was notified that human remains were uncovered on a development site at Carton Demesne. The site was inspected by Dr. Geraldine Stout of the NMS who identified at least four grave cuts in the SW quadrant of the construction site. In the immediate area of the cleared site there were numerous dark friable soil patches in the boulder clay which probably indicate further graves, suggesting that this was the location of an extensive burial ground that was likely to have extended beyond the area which had been uncovered. Human remains were uncovered during topsoil stripping for a single residence at Site 14, Temple Wood, Carton Demesne in 2015. In summary, topsoil had been removed to a depth of 0.40-0.46m across the foot print of the new house site and much of the area had been brought down to subsoil or boulder clay. In the south west corner of the construction site at least four grave cuts were identified as being cut into the boulder clay. These run in an east west axis concentrated in an area c. 10m square. The evidence suggested that there is an extensive burial ground on site which is likely to extend beyond the limits of the area uncovered to date. A limited programme of Archaeological Testing was subsequently undertaken under License No. 15E353. The initial programme of archaeological testing was carried out in three phases, as follows: 1. Four test trenches were excavated by machine to the east (T-1), south (T-2), west (T-3) and north (T-4) of the area in which burial was initially discovered (Cutting 1). The locations of the test trenches and extent of Cutting 1. All the test trenches were 1.9m wide. 2. The bases and sides of the test trenches were then cleaned and investigated by hand, as was Cutting 1. 3. All uncovered features and fragments of human remains were then plotted and photographed. The test-trenches (T14-1 to T14-4) were excavated in splits of c. 5cm depths in order to ensure that no damage is caused to any human remains that might be uncovered. All trenches were 1.9m wide and generally excavated to depths of 0.4 – 0.45m. The investigations were undertaken by an archaeological crew of two, including the licence holder and an osteoarchaeologist. Evidence for a possible enclosing feature/ditch was uncovered in Cutting 1, T14-1 and T14-2. In Cutting 1, the evidence suggests that this may have been truncated by a later drain feature. This feature may be associated with the planning of trees in this area of the demesne in the late 18th century, which was associated with paths and tracks. The enclosing feature appears to be 3.8 (T14-2) – 4.2m (T14-1) in width and its external edges are approximately 26.9m apart (N-S) based on the evidence from T14-2 and Cutting 1. The eastern extent of the feature was uncovered at a distance of 19.6m from the western commencement edge of T-1. However, no evidence for the feature was uncovered in T14-3 or T14-5, which were excavated to the west of Cutting 1, and consequently its east-west extent remains unknown. There was total of 14 locations where human bone was uncovered, although initial investigations indicate that some of these locations may be associated with disturbances. Only 9 of these (SK-A, SK-B, SK-C, SK-D, SK-E, SK-F, SK-G: Cutting 1; SK-K and SK-L: T-2) have associated discernible graves. Consequently, it is tentatively suggested that a total of 9 partial graves have been identified, 7 within the footprint of the proposed development in Site 14 (Cutting 1). The southern extent of the cemetery is located within Site 16 to the south but, based on the evidence from T14-2 and T16-2 to T16-6 outside the footprint of the proposed development within this site. There is no evidence that the cemetery extends into Site 12 or across the access road into Site 15. The lack of association with a church building, grave slabs, pottery, other artefacts or dedicative saints suggest that this is a secular cemetery of early medieval date (Byrne 2016).
