Description
Situated on a slight SE-facing slope. A series of enclosures and linear features visible as cropmarks on a Digital Globe aerial photograph (taken 13 July 2011; SMR file). A smaller inner sub-circular enclosure (diam. c. 44m E-W) is tangentially situated within and at the W edge of a larger enclosure (diam. c. 75m) which, in turn, is abutted by remnants of other linear features and small field-like enclosures probably indicating a field system (LH024-074001-). The features are also visible on Map Genie (1995). See the attached view from Digital Globe Compiled by: Paul Walsh Date of upload: 30 March 2014 Amended: 9 June 2023

- LH024-094 Concentric enclosure
Description
Situated on the summit of a broad hill that overlooks a W-E section of the River Boyne downriver from Drogheda. A gradiometer survey (23R0172) has identified a complex enclosure defined by three roughly concentric features that are likely to be fosses (Murphy 2023). The innermost enclosure (diam. c. 20m) which has a faint signal is off-centre within a subcircular enclosure (dims c. 45m N-S; c. 40m E-W), the perimeter of which at N cuts an oval enclosure (dims c. 20m N-S; c. 15m E-W), also with a faint signal. The subcircular enclosure is within a D-shaped area (dims c. 80m E-W; c. 65m N-S), the defining fosse of which originates and terminate at two points on the fosse of the subcircular enclosure at SW. This third enclosure is within a larger D-shaped area (dims c. 110m E-W; c. 90m N-S), the ditch of which arises from the fosse of the third enclosure at N and swings around to the E and SE before extending off to the W where it is probably morphing into a field system (ME024-094001-) with field drains extending from it to the S. Some lighter field drains are also attached to the inner subcircular enclosure making smaller plots (dims c. 30m x c. 20m). Some other field drains are attached to the largest enclosure at NE and SE but do not extend very far, and lighter, straighter N-S and E-W drain features further E are probably from an unmapped post-medieval system. The third and fourth enclosures are cut by a NNW-SSE service road to the Drogheda cement factory. (Murphy 2023) See the attached grey-scale image from Murphy (2012, fig. 7) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload; 4 May 2023 Murphy, D. 2023 Report on Geophysical Survey at Newtown Rd., Newtownstalaban, Co. - LH025-003001 Church
Description
Located at the E end of a low ENE-WSW ridge. This is probably the parish church of a detached part of Tullyallen parish. The name ‘Teach Liobáin’ is derived from St Libhear, who succeeded St Cainneach or Canice as abbot at the sixth century monastery of Aghaboe (LA022-019001-) (Ó Riain 2011, 396-7). The name is attested in a charter of Mellifont abbey (LH023-027002-) in 1203 (Garry 1977, 59-60), and the abbey still held land at Stalebon at the suppression in 1540 (White 1943, 215). The church is not mentioned in that inquisition, so it might already have been derelict, and it is described as a ruin on Taylor and Skinner’s map of County Louth in 1778. Featureless portions of the E and W gables of a simple rectangular church (max. dims 10m x 5m) survive. There is no evidence of a doorway in the W gable which may indicate that it was a late medieval church. A stoup which had been kept nearby at Newtown House and is now in the Millmount Museum (LH024-04119-) is probably from this church (Campbell 2019). The above description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 17 July 2007 Amended: 30 December 2020
- LH025-003002 Graveyard
Description
Located at the E end of an ENE-WSW ridge. The church (LH025-003001-) is within a subrectangular graveyard (dims c. 25-38m NNW-SSE; c. 23-26m ENE-WSW) defined by masonry walls. The legible headstones have dates from 1743 to 1962 but most of the burial took place in the nineteenth century (Garry 1970). Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 30 December 2020
