- KE079-035 Cross
Description
Stone cross described by O'Sullivan and Sheehan (1996, 277, no. 946) as a 'small roughly shaped stone cross which inclines to SW and measures 1.05m long and .25m x .08m.' See attached drawing of cross taken from O'Sullivan and Sheehan 1996, Fig. 176 The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. - KE079-035001 Ecclesiastical enclosure
Description
Square-shaped ecclesiastical enclosure described by O'Sullivan and Sheehan (1996, 277, no. 946) as follows; 'This heavily overgrown square enclosure [KE079-035001-] is located on a slight rise close to the S bank of the Valencia river, just W of Cahersiveen town. Measuring 32m square internally, it is bounded at S by a 1m wide rubble wall that is faced with upright slabs on both sides. A wall of similar construction forms the S sections of the E and W sides of the enclosure, and elsewhere the site is defined by a stone built wall of relatively modern date. No entrance feature is apparent. The interior of the enclosure is traversed by an E-W row of intermittent upright slabs, located c. 10m from its N limits. On the S side of this row is a pair of conjoined huts [KE079-035005/006-] and a leacht [KE079-035003-] which is surmounted by a stone cross [KE079-035----]. A large number of uninscribed upright slabs occur in the SE quadrant of the enclosure, which presumably relate to its period of use as a ceallúnach [KE079-035007-]'. - KE079-035003 Leacht
Description
According to O'Sullivan and Sheehan (1996, 277, 946), this leacht consists of a loosely piled, rectangular platform of stones that is retained by upright slabs set on edge. Some of these slabs, which average .5m high, incline markedly outwards. The leacht measures 4.5m N-S x 3.5m E-W and its composition includes much quartz. It is surmounted by a stone cross KE079-035----. Revised by: Caimin O'Brien Date of revised upload: 9 August 2022

Located approximately at the centre of the enclosure, this poorly preserved pair of circular huts are of corbelled drystone construction. The hut at E has an internal diameter of 4.45m and a maximum wall height of 0.7m at N. It features traces of an independent entrance at SSE and the remains of a communicating passage with the W hut at WSW. The latter hut is 4.25m in internal diameter. Its wall is best preserved at N, where it is 1.15m wide and 0.65m high internally. The interiors of both huts contain much loose stone'. Description
This site, located on the W outskirts of Cahersiveen town, is depicted on the OS maps as a circular enclosure. It was described by Henry as a 'small round fort with no distinct remains inside the rampart' (1957, 70), and was noted in 1848 by Windele as a calluragh (RIA MS 2 C 11). At present only a curving boundary, denoting the S outline of the site, survives. Its N limits are no longer distinguishable and the interior is filled with debris and overgrowth. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 1011. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 30 July 2013
- KE079-040001 Ringfort - rath
Description
According to O'Sullivan and Sheehan (1996, 330, no. 1011), only a curving boundary, denoting the S outline of the rath, survives. Its N limits are no longer distinguishable and the interior is filled with debris and overgrowth (ibid.). The rath is depicted on the 1846 and 1894 OS 6-inch maps as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m). It was described by Henry (1957, 70) as a 'small round fort with no distinct remains inside the rampart'. Dunne (2000, 92) described the condition of the rath in 1997 as 'virtually destroyed', with a bank remaining along the S arc and a concrete farmyard covering most of the site. Archaeological monitoring in 1998 revealed a subcircular arc of discoloured soil in the E area of the rath and the upper portion of a rotary quern was recovered (ibid.). Subsequent excavation proved the arc to be the remains of the fosse (Wth 3.7m; D 1.5m) which had been backfilled and utilised as a field drain in more recent times (Dunne 2000, 92). No datable material or other artefacts were recovered from the fosse (ibid.). The interior of the rath was used as a children's burial ground (KE079-040----). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 30 May 2011
- KE079-044 Ringfort - cashel
Description
Internal diam. 22m N-S, 20m E-W This poorly preserved caher is located in rough grazing land on a W facing slope of Bentee mountain, and affords a panoramic view of Valencia Harbour to NW. The enclosing bank of stone and gravel is sod-covered but appears to be faced with a regular coursing of thin slabs, particularly at W. The bank has been completely removed at E, where a field wall truncates the site. Elsewhere it averages 2.1m and .5m in external and internal height respectively, and is up to 4m wide. Three circular huts occupy the level interior of the caher. The largest (KE079-044001-) occurs in the NE quadrant, where it abuts the enclosing bank. Measuring 6.2m x 5.9m internally, its wall averages 1.5m wide and .75m high. Where exposed, its inner face is regularly coursed with thin slabs. The entrance is not identifiable. Immediately to W of the first hut is the semicircular outline of the second (KE079-044002-). It appears to have been about 4m in internal diameter, and its wall averages 1.8m wide and .6m high. The third hut (KE079-044003-) is located in the site's SE quadrant, with walls 1.2m wide and .8m high; a possible entrance gap, 1m wide, is preserved at N. The hut measures 5.4m in internal diameter, and its wall abuts the site's enclosing bank. An overgrown shallow depression, with a scattering of stone along its edges, occurs in the SW quadrant of the site and may represent the site of a fourth hut (KE079-044004-). The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 586. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 29 July 2013

- KE079-118 Castle - unclassified
Description
Delap proposed the existence of a castle at this location following the discovery there of several large dressed stones and a cannon ball during the demolition of an old cottage (1910a, 227). No evidence for an antiquity now survives at the site, which overlooks the S shore of the estuary of the Ferta river. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 1112. - KE079-119 Megalithic structure
Description
Located in rocky grazing land, on the NW slopes of Bentee mountain, a slab of roughly triangular elevation with a straight top stands .65m high and measures 1.3m x .1m at base; N-S. Its W face features a large, circular depression which measures .17m x .15m in diameter and is .12m deep. Abutting its E face and inclining heavily to N is a long slab. At its N end, 2.5m from the upright slab, are a couple of prostrate, largely sod-covered slabs. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 1479.
