Recorded monuments
- KE080-039 Megalithic structure
Description
This ruined monument is located in poor land at the head of a small valley, between Keelnagore and Knockavahaun mountains. The valley opens to W and provides an extensive view across tracts of bog to Bentee mountain. Five stones survive, two of which may be identified as the side-stones of a chamber, while one probably served as an end-stone. On average these stones measure .72m high, 1.1m long and .2m wide. The S side-stone and the end-stone have collapsed inwardly, and lying askew on top of the former is the fourth stone, .9m .35m, which may originally have served as a roof-stone. The fifth stone lies just to the W of this arrangement, but may not have formed part of the original structure. Abutting the perimeter of the structure to N and E is a sod-covered pile of small stones and rocks, which may be the remnants of a cairn. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 86. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 28 July 2013
- KE080-039001 Fulacht fia
Description
In rough grazing, on a W-facing hillslope overlooking the valley of the Carhan River. A horseshoe-shaped mound (14.7m E-W, 7.9m N-S; H 1.6m) of burnt material whose opening (2.5m E-W; 2.4m N-S) faces a stream to the N. Clumps of gorse cover the mound and the stream is eroding the W end of its N side, exposing heat-shattered stones and charcoal-enriched soil. An enclosure (KE080-039002-) lies c. 20m to the S and an unclassified megalithic tomb (KE080-039----) is c. 70m to the SE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 30 May 2011
- KE080-039002 Enclosure
Description
In moor-grass-covered grazing on bog on a W-facing hillslope overlooking the valley of the Carhan River. A circular area (diam. 15m) enclosed by the remains of a low bank (Wth 1.2m; H 0.2m) from which large slabs and boulder-type stones (max. H 0.7m) protrude at irregular intervals SW-SE. Elsewhere occasional traces of the bank are evident. A fulacht fia (KE080-039001-) lies c. 20m to the N and an unclassified megalithic tomb (KE080-039----) is c. 50m to the E. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 30 May 2011
