Description
Located at the crest of a steep slope down (Wth c. 50m; H c. 20m) to a S-N section of the River Boyne. Sir William Wilde (1849, 163) recorded that at the first lock below Navan the height above it was known as Knockminaun or Kid’s Hill where there was a small barrow. A bowl Food Vessel and flint arrowheads, now in the National Museum of Ireland, were recovered from a ‘stone cist’ in this area (Waddell 1970, 127) which has been occupied by a water-treatment plant since before 2000 (OSAP). The precise location is not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. - ME025-017 Bridge
Description
Situated on a S-N section of the River Boyne (Wth c. 70m) just before its course changes to a W-E direction. A bridge known as ‘Babe’s Bridge’ or ‘Mabe’s Bridge’ is referred to from the thirteenth century when ‘pontus Johannis le Baub’ is recorded in numerous land grants to St Thomas’ Augustinian abbey (DU018-020051-) that were witnessed by Simon de Rochford, bishop of Meath (1194-1224). Babe’s bridge was the only bridge on the River Boyne to withstand the severe flood of 1330. In 1463 it is recorded that a man called Babe had left six acres for the maintenance of the bridge but that this land had been taken into the King’s hands and the bridge was consequently in disrepair. As a result the Irish Parliament entrusted the land and the care of the bridge to the clergy of Donaghmore (ME025-015001-) and Dunmoe (ME025-018001-). It is not recorded in the Civil Survey (1655) or the on the Down Survey (1656-8) maps, so it must have been defunct by then. It may have been disused by 1550, by which time Kilcarn Bridge (ME025-039----) on the more direct R147 road from Navan to Dunshaughlin and Dublin had been built. In 1988 a single pointed segmental arch (Wth 5.2m; L 7.15m) survived on the E bank of the river which was repaired at that time. The pier is described as 15 feet by 6 feet 6 inches (dims 4.6m x 2m) with breakwaters that have pyramidal caps on both the upstream and downstream faces. Traces of at least two other piers are represented on the 1908 and the current OS maps. It is likely that the bridge dates from the thirteenth century and may have had eleven arches. (O’Keefe and Simington 1991, 115-19) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. - ME025-028 Cist
Description
Sir William Wilde (1849, 163) records the discovery of several sepulchral urns in small cists at a place called Knock-a-Raymon. Its exact location is not known but it was further down the river than the flax mill that is depicted on the 1836 edition of the OS 6-inch map and it is likely to be on the high ground overlooking the river. Archaeological testing (99E0010) in the vicinity of this location by J. Kiely produced no related material (excavations.ie 1999: 699), and further testing (20E0493) by Donald Murphy had a similar result (excavations.ie 2020:222). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). - ME025-029 Barrow - unclassified
Description
Located at the crest of a N-facing slope overlooking a SSW-NNE portion of the River Boyne and its flood-plain which begins to expand here on the E bank. An inhumation in a long cist or slab-lined grave was uncovered at the centre of what was described locally as a circular mound (diam. c. 14m; H c. 1m) that was destroyed during building work in 1976. The supine burial of a female was extended E-W with the head at W and it was recorded by E. P. Kelly of the National Museum of Ireland (excavations.ie 1976:028). No artefacts were recovered, although human bones were retrieved from the spoil. No close date is available but it is likely to be an Iron Age pre-Christian interment (Kelly 1977) and it may well be the location referred to by Wilde (1849, 163) as Knock-a-Raymon (ME025-028----). Archaeological monitoring (99E0011) by C. Mullins of a sewage trench on the road to the S produced no related material (excavatrions.ie 1999:686) and further monitoring (06E0165) by S. Delaney of the laying of a water-pipe in the same area produced had a similar result (excavationis.ie 2006:1606). - ME025-053 Enclosure
Description
Situated on a fairly level landscape, at the crest of a steep slope down (H c. 12m) to a SW-NE section of the River Boyne which is c. 150m distant. This feature could be depicted as a rectangular enclosure on the 1836 edition of the OS 6-inch map but it is described by C. Mullins in 1999 (SMR file) as a rectangular grass-covered area (dims c. 20m NW-SE; c. 20m NE-SW) defined by a slight bank. Cartographic analysis and archaeological testing (20E0493) by Donald Murphy demonstrated that this is the remains of a post-medieval plot defined by earthen banks (Wth 2.5m; H 0.55m) that were excavated at NW and NE, the latter with a cobbled surface (Wth 0.65m) on its NE side. A relict field bank (Wth 2.41m; H 0.31m) with an accompanying ditch (Wth 2.35m) extended NW from the W angle of the enclosure. These features were associated with glass and ceramics of nineteenth or twentieth century date. Some other cut features extending NW-SE as well as NE-SW could be earlier. - ME025-058001 Souterrain
Description
Located at the W edge of a fairly level landscape and at the crest of a steep slope down (H c. 12m) to the flood-plain of a S-N section of the River Boyne. The area of a proposed water-treatment plant (dims c. 360m NNW-SSE; c. 60-100m ENE-WSW) was comprehensively tested (91E0007) by D. L. Swan (excavations.ie 1991:102), but a souterrain passage came to light at the extreme SW edge of the development in January 1999. It was archaeologically investigated (99E0178) by K. Hanley (1999, 8-12) and consists (excavations.ie 1999:687) of a passage (L 3.3m; H 1m) with seven lintels extending W and sloping down to a subcircular beehive chamber (dims 2.65m N-S; 2.2m E-W; H 1.7m). From the entrance a second passage extended N but this passage did not survive. It was possible to preserve the chamber and the adjacent part of the passage. Some furrows and ditches (ME025-058002-) and a circular structure (ME025-058003-) were also recorded. Further monitoring (20E0575) by J. McCarthy (2021) produced no further material (excavations.ie 2020:309). Description
Located at the W edge of a fairly level landscape and at the crest of a steep slope down (H c. 12m) to the flood-plain of a S-N section of the River Boyne. Hanley (1999, 12-13) in excavation (99E0178) trenches (Wth 1.5m) around the entrance to the souterrain identified furrows (Wth 0.24-00.48m; D 0.12m: Wth 0.88-1.06m; D 0.3m) beneath the surface, but some ditches (Wth 0.65m; D 0.44m) were also present, running NE-SW. However, none could be regarded as a defensive feature that might have enclosed the souterrain. One excavation trench exposed the base of a field bank associated with modern ceramics. Description
Located at the W edge of a fairly level landscape and at the crest of a steep slope down (H c. 12m) to the flood-plain of a S-N section of the River Boyne. Hanley (1999, 12-13) in an excavation (99E0178) trench (L 21m; Wth 1.5m) identified a curving slot-trench (Wth 0.4-0.5m; D 0.1-0.2m) that would have enclosed a circular area (int. diam. c. 4.1m). It was c. 20m N of the entrance to the souterrain (ME025-058001-) but no other features are associated with it and no artefacts were recovered (excavations.ie 1999:687), but this could well be part of the foundation trench of small hut-site.
