Description
Situated on a rise at the outer edge of a shelf overlooking a steep slope down to Newcastle Lough that is c. 350m distant at the nearest point. This is a circular grass-covered area (diam. 37.5m WNW-ESE; 34m NE-SW) defined by an earthen bank (Wth of base 3.8-4m; int. H 0.6 at E to 1.1m at W; ext. H 1.2m at E to 1.6m at W) and hedge, with an outer fosse (at WNW: Wth of top 7m; Wth of base 3m; ext. D 0.5m) SE-W-NE. There is a modern entrance at E but the original entrance (Wth of base c. 2m), now blocked, is that at SE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). Description
Situated close to an outlet at the E angle of the sub-rectangular Newcastle Lough (dims c. 350m NW-SE; c. 210-280m NE-SW), which is smaller than its representation (dims c. 500m NW-SE; c. 450m NE-SW) on the 1836 edition of the OS 6-inch map. It is depicted as a small island (diam. c. 15m) only on the OS 25-inch map, and is now attached to the shore. It is visible as a slightly raised grass-covered oval area (dims 18m E-W; 14m; H 0.6m) with some trees. There is no indication of any artificial construction but fragments of quernstones have been found on it (SMR file). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). Description
Located on a gentle NE-facing slope. This is a subcircular overgrown area (dims 42m E-W; 36m N-S) that slopes down slightly to the E (H 0.8m). It is defined by an overgrown earthen bank (at WSW: Wth of base 7.5m; int. H 1.3m; ext. H 2.5m) SE-W that is largely reduced to a scarp (at ENE: Wth of base 3.5m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 2m) elsewhere, with an outer stone facing NW-E. There are traces of an outer fosse (at ENE: Wth of base 1.5m; ext. D 0.2m) WNW-N-ENE that is re-cut as a drain S-WNW. The most likely original entrance (Wth of base 1.4m) is a gap at ENE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moroe Date of revision: 3 September 2018
