- ME005-018 Mound
Description
Located on a rise towards the bottom of a NW-facing slope, with an old quarry just to the SE and it is at the SE corner of a field. A mound is depicted here on the manuscript map (21 F 14 (63, 44)) in NLI. This is a grass-covered circular mound (diam. 12m; H 1.2-1.6m) that is quarried at W and SW and slightly truncated by a NNW-SSE field bank at E and an ENE-WSW field bank at S. It may be a spoil mound. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). Description
Located towards the top of a N and W-facing slope with the valley of a small E-W stream c. 85m to the N. This is a circular grass-covered area (diam. 40m N-S) that slopes down to the N (H 1.8m). It is defined by an earthen bank (at S: Wth of base 9.5m; int. H 0.9m; ext. H 1.5m; at N: Wth of base 5m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 1.45m) and hedge with an outer fosse (Wth of top 4.8-5.8m; Wth of base 0.7m at S to 3.5m at N). There is a slight outer bank (at N: Wth of base 2m; ext. H 0.1m) W-N-E. There is an entrance (Wth of base 1.8m) but no causeway at SSE but the original entrance (Wth of base 2.2m), now blocked, and causeway (Wth of top 2.4m; H 0.5m) are at NNW. Description
Situated on a rise on top of a NNE-SSW ridge. It is depicted as an embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 30m) on the 1836 edition of the OS 6-inch map where it is described in gothic lettering as a ‘Fort’, and as an arc of a bank SW-N on the 1908 edition. This is a circular grass-covered area (diam. c. 38m N-S; c. 38m E-W) defined by a scarp (at NW: Wth 3m; H 0.85m). There is no visible bank, fosse or entrance. Description
Situated on a slight S-facing slope. This is a circular grass and rush-covered area (diam. 30.5m NW-SE; 28.5m NE-SW) that slopes down to the S. It is defined by an earthen bank (at E: Wth of base 3.5m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 1m) incorporated into the bank of a farm lane inside the monument N-ESE, and an outer fosse deepened to a drain (Wth of base 2.1m) N-ESE, but the perimeter is largely reduced to a scarp (at SSW: Wth 1.1m; H 0.5m). The original entrance is not identified, and the monument remains unplanted in a forest since before 1995 (OSAP).
