• MA092-071 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, located on a rise in gently undulating terrain, with good but not extensive views. It overlooks a small lake, Loughangormadeen 60m to N, and there is a large lake, Lough Bekan c. 250m to SE. Slightly raised, broadly oval area (50.3m NW–SE; 45.9m) defined by a substantial earthen bank (Wth 5.7m at NE, 6.6m at SW, int. H 1.3m at NE, 1.1m at SW; ext. H 2.8m at NE, 3.6m at SW), outside which it is enclosed by a fosse (Wth 3.5m at NE, 3.3m at SW) with possible remnants of an external bank. The bank is well preserved with stones protruding in parts along its inner face. The fosse is broad and flat-based. The outer edge of the fosse is marked at E–SE by a single line of prostrate stones; from SE–NW by an earth and stone field fence (Wth 1.5m; ext. H 1.2m), topped with a post and wire fence, with traces of stone facing on its vertical inner face; and at NNW–NE by a low narrow stony rise or cropmark. These features may preserve the line of an original external bank, as may a low rise (Wth c. 4m) rath at SW. The interior is level, except for a slight rise to S. The entrance gap (Wth 3m) is at E, with a causeway (Wth 4.8m) across the fosse. There are narrow eroded gaps in the bank to NE and N; the break at N is faced with large stones on its slumped external face. • MA092-122 Enclosure
  Description

  Located in undulating pastureland. A raised area (diam. c. 38m NE-SW) defined by a scarp from NNE-S and incorporated into a field boundary from S to SW. • MA092-125 Burnt mound
  Description

  In a flat expanse of damp, rush-grown pasture, located c. 70m S of the current shoreline at the SE end of Cloonacurry Lough. The 1838 and 1917 OS 6-inch maps indicate that the lakeshore lay closer to the burnt mound in the past; the size of the lake has diminished due to modern drainage practices. This burnt mound was first noted when burnt stone was exposed in February 2015 during ground works in advance of forestry plantation (pers. comm. Michael Cox, 23rd February 2015). It consists of as a very low-profile, circular, grass-covered rise (diam. 6.5m NE–SW; 6.5m NW–SE; H 0.2-0.3m) of firm, dry ground which contrasts with the soft, damp, rush-grown condition of the surrounding field. Concentrations of angular stone chips in a dark-grey soil were noted where the sod cover was denuded. An exclusion zone protects the mound from further disturbance. • MA092-126 Anomalous stone group
  Description

  In a flat expanse of damp, rush-grown pasture, bordering the SE shore of Cloonacurry Lough. To S and SW there is a gradual rise in ground level, and the N and NE side of the lake is bordered by a low ridge. The land was converted to forestry in 2015. This consists of a row (L c. 5.5m NNE–SSW) of six large, close-set stones (L 0.8-1.77; T 0.15-0.35m), with their long axes parallel. Some of the stones are embedded in the ground, protruding no more than c. 0.5m above the surface, and others lie prostrate on the surface, with gaps of c. 0.4-0.6 between individual stones. Some smaller stones barely protruding from the surface can be seen adjacent to the larger stones. The row is aligned NNE–SSW. The long axes of almost all the stones are NW–SE or E–W, more or less at right angles to the overall alignment of the row. The stones are partly obscured by moss and sod.   Description

  In an expanse of damp, rush-grown pasture, bordering the SE shore of Cloonacurry Lough. To S there is a gradual rise in ground level, and the N– NE side of the lake is bordered by a low ridge. The field was converted to forestry in 2015. Slight remnants of a burnt mound were noted in March 2015 in and around a forestry trench at approximately this location (pers. comm. Michael Cox, consultant archaeologist). According to local information, the burnt mound was levelled during land reclamation works undertaken in the 1980’s. • MA092-128 Burnt mound
  Description

  Located in damp, rush-grown pasture, bordering the SW shore of Cloonacurry Lough. A strip (Wth c. 10m) of wet, reed-grown ground intervenes between the burnt mound and the current lake edge. This burnt mound is evident as a very low-profile, roughly oblong rise (c. 10m N–S; c. 5.5m E–W) which was partly levelled in the past. It is highest (H 0.2-0.3m) at its N and S ends, with a low irregular surface inbetween. It is grass-covered and largely free of rushes. At the S end, scatters of small angular stone fragments, dark grey soil and charcoal fragments were exposed on the surface. The mound was first noted in March 2015 during forestry plantation ground works (pers. comm. Michael Cox). An exclusion zone protects the mound from the forestry works.
