Recorded monuments
- WA034-021 Ringfort - rath
Description
Located towards the bottom of a W-facing slope, with a NNW-SSE stream c. 180m to the W. Circular scrub-covered area (diam. 33.5m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 4.5-6m; int. H 1.4-1.7m; ext. H 1.5-2m). There is an entrance (Wth 2m) at W, but there is no visible fosse. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Waterford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Revised by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 27 September 2011
- WA034-023 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on a broad N-S spur. When inspected on 01 August 1990 this consisted of a circular grass-covered area (diam. 32m NW-SE) defined by a slight earthen bank (Wth 3m; max. int. H 0.8m; max. ext. H 1m), which has been altered SE-SW and removed by quarrying SW-NW. There was no visible fosse or entrance. A subsequent inspection on 28 February 2012 showed that gorse removal had damaged the interior of the monument and that the bank had been partially levelled from NW to NE with only slight traces of the bank (ext. H 0.3m) remaining. A slight scarp defines the edge of the interior from NE to SE. No bank or scarp is evident from SE to NW. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 07 July 2014
- WA034-024001 Ecclesiastical enclosure
Description
Marked as a large oval embanked enclosure (ext. dims. c. 90m NW-SE; c. 70m NE-SW), or a bivallate enclosure (int. dims. c. 60m NW-SE; c. 40m NE-SW) on the 1840 ed. of the OS 6-inch map and situated in pasture on a SE-facing slope. It has been described as a church site known as Cill Choluim Deirg, but a holy well at its W edge had been relcaimed before 1900 (Power 1952, 90). Locally, it is associated with an ‘altar stone’ or a stone with a basin that could be a bullaun stone, but which cannot be found now. Apart from a curving field bank and townland boundary with Craggs W-N-E, which may respect the line of an enclosure, nothing is visible at ground level. It is bisected by an E-W farm lane. Power, Rev. P. (1952) The placenames of the Decies. (second ed.) Cork University Press. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Waterford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Revised by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 27 September 2011
- WA034-024002 Bullaun stone
Description
There is local information of an ‘altar stone’, also described as a stone with a basin that could be a bullaun stone, at the site of the large enclosure (WA034-024001-) which may be a church site (Power 1952, 90). The stone could not be found. Power, Rev. P. (1952) The placenames of the Decies. (second ed.) Cork University Press. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 02 October 2011
- WA034-026 Enclosure
Description
Marked as as circular embanked enclosure on the 1840 (ext. diam. c. 35-40m) and the 1927 (ext. diam. c. 25-30m) eds of the OS 6-inch map, and situated at the crest of a W-facing slope of a N-S spur. This is a subcircular grass-covered area (dims. 27m N-S; 24.5m E-W) defined by a slight scarp (H 0.1-0.4m). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Waterford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999).
