Description
In pasture on slight NW facing slope with good views in all directions. Situated on an 'Old Deer Park' belonging to Faha House located 980m to NE. Present remains consist of a slightly raised circular-shaped area (diam. 36m) enclosed by an earthen bank (int. H 0.45m; ext. H 1.1m; base Wth. 6.05m) and external fosse (base Wth. 2.1m) best preserved from NNE through E to SSE with an entrance gap (Wth. 6m) at NW. The slightly undulating interior is densely overgrown. Field boundaries intersect the enclosing element at NE and SW. Monument visible as a tree-covered earthwork on Google Earth orthoimage taken 19/11/2019. Description
In pasture on slight NNE facing slope with good views in most directions. On the 'Old Deer Park' standing adjacent to a laneway on the demesne lands of Faha House located 580m to NE. Present remains consist of a slightly raised circular-shaped area (diam. 28m) enclosed by an earthen bank (int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.7m; base Wth. 3.25m) from S through N to NNE and from NE to SE reduced to a scarp from NNE to NE and SSE to S with traces of an external fosse visible throughout. A quarry pit (diam. 8m, D 0.5m) has been dug into the external face of the bank at E. The level interior is densely overgrown. Description
In pasture on slight NE facing slope with the ruins of Faha House located 330m to SE. Not depicted on the 1840 0S 6-inch map. The 1897 2OS 5-inch map depicts the monument as a raised roughly circular-shaped area (approx. int. diam. 30m; approx. ext. diam. 40m) planted with trees. Present remains consist of a slightly raised circular-shaped area (diam. 30m) enclosed by an earth and stone bank (int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.9m; base Wth. 6.10m) disturbed on all sides by animal activity and dumped material. The undulating interior is densely overgrown. Depicted on the 1840 0S 6-inch map as a grove of trees adjacent to a roadway leading to Faha House and not as an antiquity. On this map the earthwork is shown as a roughly circular-shaped area indicated by a solid line in the same fashion as the surrounding field boundaries. Depicted as a circular-shaped earthwork (approx. diam. 28m) and not as an antiquity on the OS 25-inch map. Representation of earthwork on revsied OS 6-inch map suggests possible barrow monument, however its location on demesne lands may suggest the remains of a designed landscape feature. In level pasture immediately S of an entrance road to Faha House. Situated on the demesne lands of Faha House that is located 150m to the E. Not depicted on the 1840 OS 6-inch map. Depicted as a landscape feature on the 1897 OS 25-inch map where it is shown as a roughly circular-shaped tree-planted area (approx. diam. 38m) indicated by a solid line in the same fashion as the surrounding field boundaries. No surface remains visible today. Cropmark of levelled enclosure visible on Google Earth orthoimage taken 19/11/2019. This image clearly shows the levelled earthwork standing beside the avenue to Faha House along with earthworks related to the designed landscaping of Faha House and its demesne as shown on the 1840 OS map. Description
Detached four-bay two-storey house, built c. 1830. Hipped slate roof with cut limestone eaves course and rendered chimneystack. Lined-and-ruled render over rubble limestone walls with render quoins. Square-headed openings to first floor, some with remains of render surrounds, brick voussoirs, one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows and limestone sills. Square-headed window openings to ground floor, some blocked up, some with brick surrounds and bipartite one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows. Square-headed openings to rear (east) elevation with red brick voussoirs, now blocked up. Square-headed opening having remains of render surround, brick voussoirs and glazed overlight over timber battened door. Remains of round-headed carriage arch to south with red brick voussoirs, now blocked up, adjoining surviving wall of ruined Faha House. Thirteen-bay single-storey outbuilding to north-west having pedimented carriage arch. Hipped slate roof. Roughly dressed painted limestone walls. Round-headed arches with red brick voussoirs. Square-headed window openings having red brick voussoirs and limestone sills. Square-headed door openings with red brick voussoirs and replacement timber battened doors. Former glasshouse to north having gable-fronted centre-bay with round-headed carriage arch. Rubble limestone walls. Seven-bay single-storey block to rear (north) elevation comprising centre-bay with pointed arch niches having brick voussoirs, strip pilasters with limestone caps and inset blind quatrefoil motifs and pointed arch window openings, now blocked up. Pointed arch window openings having brick voussoirs to recessed bays. Rubble limestone walled garden to north with north wall having brick wall to interior. Six-bay single-storey outbuilding to west with lean-to to west elevation. Pitched slate roof having brick eaves course. Painted rubble limestone walls. Square-headed window openings with brick voussoirs and concrete sills. Square-headed door openings having brick voussoirs. Five-bay single-storey outbuilding to north-east set within limestone walled garden. Pitched slate roof having brick chimneystack. Rubble limestone walls. Square-headed window openings. Round-headed door openings with brick voussoirs.
