- LI024-060 Barrow - ring-barrow
Description
In wet pasture, on slight N-facing slope. Surveyed by the ASI in 2008 and described as an oval-shaped area (24m N-S; 21m E-W) defined by an inner fosse, an outer bank, an outer fosse and the possible remains of a second outer bank with possible entrance (overall Wth 6m; base Wth 2m) at NNE. The inner fosse (Wth 10.25m; D 0.3m) is best defined from SW-W and from NNE-ENE. The remains of an outer bank (Wth 11.25m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.75m) are visible from SW-W-N-NE and appear to be truncated by a curvilinear drain and field boundary from ENE-E-S-SW. An outer fosse (Wth 8.25m; D 0.2m) is visible from SW-W-N-NE. The possible remains of a second outer bank are visible from NNW-N-NNE. The interior is grass covered and slightly uneven. A shallow drainage channel extends from the monument at NE in a northerly direction. The monument is respected by a field boundary from ENE-E-S-SW, which also forms a townland boundary from SE-S-SW. Monument is visible as a partially tree-lined earthwork on Digital Globe orthophotos taken 2011-13 and on Google Earth orthoimages taken 18/11/2018. In level, wet pasture, 135m NE of a townland boundary with Brackloon. A ring-barrow (LI024-060----) lies 170m to NW. Not depicted on OSi historic maps. Monument surveyed by the ASI in 2008 and described as an oval-shaped area (5.25m NNE-SSW; 7m WNW-ESE) defined by a scarp (Wth 1.5-1.8m; H 0.35-0.45m). The interior is grass covered. A dry land drain to N which runs WNW-ESE is channelled toward a pond 40m to WNW. Monument is visible as an oval-shaped earthwork on OSi orthoimage taken 2005-2012 and on Google Earth orthoimage taken 28/06/2018. See attached Google Earth orthoimage taken 28/06/2018. Description
In low-lying, improved pasture cut by land drains and watercourses, in the valley of the Reask River 200m to S of a townland boundary with Reask. Not depicted on OSi historic maps. Monument identified by the Archaeological Survey of Ireland as a subrectangular-shaped cropmark on oblique aerial photos (ASIAP, 118, 2 & 5) taken 23/08/2000. Monument is visible as a large subrectangular-shaped bivallate enclosure (70m N-S; 77m E-W) on OSi orthophoto taken 2005-2012, on Digital Globe orthoimage taken 2011-2013 and on Google Earth orthoimage taken 18/11/2018.
