- LI006-037 Enclosure
Description
In a heavily overgrown area immediately N of farmyard and farm buildings with ringfort (LI006-038----) located 157m to the E. The earthwork is depicted as a non-antiquity on the 1838 OS 6-inch map where the outline of the enclosure is indicated with a solid line in the same fashion as the surrounding field boundaries. On this map the monument is shown as a circular-shaped enclosure the interior of which has been planted with trees which suggests that this may have been a post-1700 tree-ring rather than that of a ringfort. The 1897 edition of the OS 25-inch map indicates a circular-shaped area (approx. int. diam. 50m) defined by a scarp. The poorly preserved, scrub-covered monument is visible today on the Digital Global orthoimage taken 2011-13 with modern farm buildings and silage pit standing in S half of the enclosure. Outline of poorly preserved monument is partially visible on Google Earth orthophoto taken 19/11/2019. See attached Google Earth orthophoto taken 19/11/2019 Compiled by: Fiona Rooney and Martin Fitzpatrick Date of upload: 8 June 2020
- LI006-038 Ringfort - rath
Description
In N corner of field that is delimited by a roadway from W through N to E. Enclosure possible (LI006-037----) 160m to W. Monument depicted on 1840 OS 6-inch map as a circular-shaped area enclosed by a bank with farmyard road to NW and public road to E. Depicted on the 1897 OS 25-inch map as a circular-shaped area (approx. int. diam. 31m; ext. diam. 50m) defined by a bank and outer ditch with a causewayed entrance (approx. Wth 5m) at S. Monument visible on Digital Globe imagery taken 2011-13 as a circular-shaped area enclosed by a bank covered with vegetation except at SW where it has been levelled to facilitate entrance to the interior which is utilised as a field. The farm laneway to NW and the public road to E have disturbed the outer ditch. Outline of monument is visible on Google Earth orthophoto taken 19/11/2019. See attached Google Earth orthophoto taken 19/11/2019 Compiled by: Fiona Rooney and Martin Fitzpatrick Date of upload: 8 June 2020
- LI006-043 Mound
Description
In the SW corner of a large gravel parking zone within Anacotty Industrial Estate, the top soil has been removed and a gravel surface has been laid in the area of the earthwork. Depicted as a non-antiquity on the 1838 OS 6-inch map where the outline of a circular area (approx. diam. 30m) indicated with a solid line has a trigonometrical station marked in the centre. The 1897 edition of the OS 25-inch map depicts a raised area surviving only from N through E to S that has been incorporated into a field boundary at E. This map also depicts a quarry 20m W of the surviving element. Digital Global orthoimage taken 2011-13 and Google Earth imagery 2018 confirms that no surface trace of the monument survives. Doubtful antiquity, the feature indicated on the 1840 OS 6-inch map have been a low mound constructed by the Ordnance Survey as a base for the Trig. Station which marked the spot height 125 ft. OD. See attached Google Earth orthoimage taken 19/11/2019 Compiled by: Fiona Rooney and Martin Fitzpatrick Date of upload: 9 June 2020
