Recorded monuments
- LI013-037 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated in the green area of a recently-built housing estate. A sub-circular area (diam. 37m N-S by 0.30m E-W) is enclosed by an earthen bank (int. H. 0.45m; ext. H. 1.2m Wth1.5m). The bank is best preserved from ESE to SSW and from WSW to NNE. The exterior of the bank has been encroached on by a wall in the SW and by tarmac from ENE to ESE. Shrubs have been planted in various locations on the bank and a broadleaf tree has recently been planted in the interior. A layer of geotextile runs along the top of the bank through which shrubs grow as well as some grass. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 27 March 2013

Description
Located atop a low hill in undulating, unused land, W of the wall of a large housing estate. The monument is heavily masked by dense scrub vegetation cover. It is on the 1924 OS 6-inch map as a sub-oval area (diam. c. 50m N-S by c. 60m E-W) enclosed by two concentric banks with the whole site enclosed by a field boundary. The site was excavated in 1973 and 1974 by Elizabeth Shee Twohig. She found that the bank appeared to have been 'faced with a wall of stones most of which slipped suddenly and cleanly into the ditch.' A complex arrangement of post holes and pits, and evidence of a wattle-built structure which had apparently been burned in situ were recorded. In one area there was a cist like hearth which contained much burnt material. Finds included a bone comb. (Shee Twohig 2000) Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 27 March 2013

Description
Situated E of a small road in the green area of a newly-built housing estate, c. 10m to NW of another enclosure (LI013-041----). It is depicted on the 1924 OS 6-inch map as an incomplete embanked sub-oval area (diam. c. 60m N-S by c. 50m E-W) defined by a scarped edge from W to NNW and NNE to ESE, and enclosed by a bank from W to ESE, with no enclosing or defining element from NNW to NNE. A field boundary impacts on the bank from SW to SE. The monument has been levelled. A gentle oval depression (diam. 27m NE-SW; D 0.2m) is visible on the ground at this location with traces of a bank (int. H less than 0.1m; Wth.1.2m; ext. H. 0.2m) from NE to SE. Description
Situated in the green area of a newly built housing estate, c. 10m SE of another enclosure (LI013-040----). It is depicted on the 1924 OS 6-inch map as a circular area (diam. c. 20m) enclosed by a bank. The monument has been levelled though a slight depression (diam. 15m; D c. 0.2m) is evident at the location. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 27 March 2013

Description
Situated in unused ground, c. 20m W of the Limerick-Tralee railway line. It is depicted on the 1840 OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 20m) but only an arch of the enclosing element is shown on the 1924 OS 6-inch map. This arc (C. 8m N-S) is now obscured by dense scrub vegetation and builder's rubble. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 27 March 2013
