Description
In pasture, on slight E-facing slope. Roughly circular area (26.9m N-S; 25m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.4m; ext. H 1.6m) with external fosse (D 0.4m; Wth 3.6m). Gaps in bank, caused by cattle accessing interior, at E and SE. Bank removed NW->N and fosse infilled NW->NE. Trackway runs N-S though centre of site. In pasture, on E-facing slope. Roughly D-shaped area (44m N-S; 50m E-W) enclosed by two concentric earthen banks with intermediate fosse (Wth 5.2m). Inner bank (int. H 0.4m; ext. H 2.8m) in very straight on W side though external bank (int. H 1.85m; ext. H 1.35m) is more rounded. Causeway entrance at NNE (Wth 4m). - LI044-006 Ritual site - holy well
Description
On N side of public road. Rectangular area in grass (12m N-S; 16m E-W) enclosed by hedging on W, N, and E sides by low wall with railing on S side. Well is located midway along S wall. Well is enclosed by 2m high circular stone wall (diam. c. 2.8m); access to well via segmental arched opening on S side of wall with steps down to well head. Well head enclosed by elliptical plastered wall (1.5m N-S; 2m E-W; 1m deep) with shrines on ledge on N side of well. According to local tradition parish church of Rathcahill (LI044-133---) was located across the road from the well. O'Donovan in 1840 (OSL vol. 2, 10) noted the circular stone wall and said that pattern was held here on 15th August, which was 'still partly continued'; according to Ó Danachair (1955, 211-2) well reputed to cure sore eyes and had a rag tree. In pasture, on E-facing slope. monument consists of two rectangular enclosures. Site A is located 8.00m E of 044-004 and consists of a rectangular area (7.00m N-S; 16.00m E-W) defined by an earthen bank. Interior levelled up to compensate for natural slope. Site B is located immediately to E of Site A in level pasture and consists of a rectangular area (28.00m N-S; 30.00m E-W) defined by low earthen banks.
