Description
On gently undulating pasture on the W slope 100m E of the Colonel’s Island in the River Maigue with pathway running past enclosure 30m to SW. Not depicted on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map. On the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map and later OSi maps the enclosure is depicted as a stand of coniferous and deciduous trees within an enclosure. Not depicted as an antiquity on any ed. OSi map. Inspected by the ASI in 2001 and described as a patch of roughly circular ground with no enclosing element (Wth 25m). The small tree-ring had only 4 deciduous trees standing, the remainder had fallen or were removed. The enclosure remains are visible on Google earth orthophotos taken 28/06/2018 and 14/02/2020. Probably the remains of a tree-ring of post-1700 date. See attached Google Earth orthoimages Compiled by: Edmond O’Donovan Date of upload: 30 July 2020

Description
A castle is depicted standing to the S of the River Maigue on the Down Survey map of Ballingaddy parish (NLI, MS 718). Westropp (1906-75, 165) recorded the following details on Castlerobert; ‘A manor, often named with Adare, from 1290 onwards. Its survey in 1331 is copied into the "Red Book" of the Earl of Kildare. 1559 The minister of Trynety Abbey had in Castle Robert a C. "which was lawles lands." 1595 The ruinous C. granted to Wallop. 1617 It was held as a possession of the Trinitarian or White Abbey, with salmon and eel weirs, by Sir J. Jephson (Inq. Chan., 5). 1638 C. and land of Robertstown or Castle Robert granted to N. Lylles; he died before 1657. (See C.S., xxiv., p. 40.) 1666 Confirmed to Sir E. Ormsby, 1669, and to Geo. Evans, of Ballyphilip, County Cork, in 1669 (Act Sett.). The church [LI021-132----] and C. were demolished for material for the bridge [LI021-036----]'. - LI021-038 Enclosure
Description
On level pasture 350m E of the townland boundary with Fanningstown, 200m NNW of an enclosure (LI021-039----). The site was depicted as an oval enclosure on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map (c. 50m NE-SW x 40m NW-SE). It is illustrated again on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map as an oval embanked enclosure (c. 40m NE-SW x 34m NW-SE) with no external ditch. The NE end of the enclosure was removed or incorporated into a linear field boundary of post-1700 date. The OSi Cassini 6-inch map depicts a new field boundary removing the SE side of the enclosure. Inspected by ASI in 2000 when no extant trace of the monument was visible. The levelled enclosure is not visible on Google earth orthophotos taken 28/06/2018 and 14/02/2020. - LI021-039 Enclosure
Description
On level ground within a modern farmyard 400m E of the townland boundary with Fanningstown, 200m SSE of an enclosure (LI021-038----). The site was depicted as a circular enclosure on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map (diam. c. 30m) with a separate field boundary of post-1700 date abutting its S side. It is depicted on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map as an oval embanked enclosure (30m N-S; 34m E-W) with no external ditch. The S boundary of the enclosure is illustrated as partially removed and incorporated into a linear field boundary of post-1700 date. The later OSi Cassini 6-inch map depicts the site unchanged. Inspected by ASI in 2000 when no extant trace of the monument was visible above ground level. The linear field boundary of post-1700 date may incorporate the truncated remains of a small section of the S enclosure bank. The levelled enclosure is not visible on Google earth orthophotos taken 28/06/2018 and 14/02/2020. See attached Google Earth orthoimages Compiled by: Edmond O’Donovan Date of upload: 30 July 2020
- LI021-040 Ringfort - rath
Description
In pasture on a low W-facing slope above former marshy ground, with good views to the S and N. The ringfort is located on the townland boundary between Castleroberts and Knockanes, 400m NNW of a ringfort (LI021-041----). The site is depicted as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 60m) in both townlands at the junction of 3 field boundaries on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map. Only the W quadrant of the site is depicted in Castleroberts townland on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map as a curving embankment (34m N-S) with no external ditch. The S, E and N enclosure boundary have been removed by 1897 and are not depicted on the map. Inspected by ASI in 2000, the interior of the site was level, raised and clear of vegetation. The site survives as a triangular area (int. 17m N-S; 13m E-W) defined by the post-1700 field boundary to the E and S, and by the curving arc of the ringfort bank (Wth 4.6m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.7m) to the W. A wide shallow fosse (Wth 3.8m; D 0.3m) is located outside the ringfort bank which was planted with young Beech trees in 2000. A modern entrance (Wth 5m) through the bank and fosse is located at the N corner along the W side of the townland boundary. The surviving section of the enclosure is visible on Google earth orthophotos as densely wooded in 28/06/2018 and 14/02/2020. See attached sketch plan surveyed and drawn by ASI and Google Earth orthoimages Compiled by: Edmond O’Donovan Date of upload: 30 July 2020

Description
In undulating pasture on a slight N-facing slope, with good views to the E and W. Located 120m W of the townland boundary with Fanningstown and 400m SSE of a ringfort (LI021-040----). The site is depicted as a circular enclosure on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map (diam. c. 50m). It is depicted on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map as a circular embanked enclosure (c. 37m E-W) with no external ditch. The NE side of the enclosure boundary is depicted with a slight concave indent suggesting it was altered or dug into. Later post-medieval field boundaries are located to the N, W and E of the enclosure on the map. Inspected by the ASI in 2000, when it was not visible on the ground apart from surface undulations, it was known locally as the site of a ‘fort’. The levelled enclosure is visible on Google Earth orthophotos in 28/06/2018 and 14/02/2020. Faint outline of levelled circular enclosure (diam. 37m) visible on Digital Globe orthophotos taken 2011-13. Description
In level pasture on a slight W-facing slope, with good views to the SW and NW. Located 160m W of the townland boundary with Fanningstown, 385m SSE of an enclosure (LI021-039----) and 400m W of Fanningstown Castle (LI021-047----). The site is depicted as a circular enclosure on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map. Shown as a partially levelled monument consisting of a U-shaped area (approx. dims. 34m N-S; 37m E-W) transected at N by a field boundary running E-W on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map. Monument appears to have been partially levelled between these map dates when the N field boundary was constructed. Inspected by the ASI in 2000, and described as a raised roughly circular shaped area (int. dims. 26m N-S; 25m E-W) defined by a shallow fosse (Wth 6.2m; D 0.2m) visible from E-S-W and not visible on the N side where the later field boundary has cut across the N quadrant of the enclosure. Outline of enclosure visible on Google earth orthophotos taken 28/06/2018 and 14/02/2020.
