- DU011-144001 Ecclesiastical enclosure
Description
Geophysical survey (Licence no. 03R095) identified a large enclosure and field system (DU011-144003-) truncated by the Rathbeale road. The majority of the monument is located to the N of the road on high ground with extensive views over the surrounding countryside. Encompassing three concentric enclosures the large outer enclosure (c. 200m diam.) has an entranceway to the N. An inner enclosure (c. 130m diam.) enclosed a smaller enclosure (c. 70m diam.) containing burials (DU011-144002-). Test-excavation (Licence no. 03E1080) recovered a perforated stone bead, fragment of a decorated bone comb and an iron blade indicating an early medieval date (Baker 2010). Geophysical survey (Licence no. 04R023) and test-excavation (Licence no. 04E0543) in the field immediately to the east which is within the townland of Mooretown indicated the enclosure continued here. The inner enclosure ditch (3m in width) contained animal bone and a sherd of possible souterrain ware. Further geophysical survey (Licence no. 05R170) defined the southern limit of the enclosure south of the road, also within the townland of Mooretown. The monument is preserved in situ and is scheduled via the Oldtown LAP for inclusion in an archaeological park. Compiled by: Christine Baker Date of upload: 4 February 2015
- DU011-144002 Burial
Description
Burials were exposed during the construction of a temporary roadway. Subsequent geophysical survey (Licence no. 03R095) and investigation (Licence no. 03E1080) revealed the burials within an inner enclosure (c. 70m diam.) of a large early medieval enclosure (DU011-144001-) and field system (DU011-144003-). Disarticulated skeletal remains were recovered from the disturbed area representing a minimum of twenty individuals, consisting of eighteen adults and two juveniles (Baker 2004). In order to assess the density of the undisturbed skeletal remains an area of 5m x 5m was investigated and ten in situ burials were discovered aligned E-W within clearly identifiable grave-cuts were identified. A perforated stone bead and bone bead were directly associated with the burials. In order to assess the extent of the burials a second area 52m E of the above was investigated. A further six burials, also aligned E-W, were identified at this location. The burials were identified 0.3m below ground level (Baker 2010). The burial ground has been preserved in situ and is scheduled via the Oldtown LAP for inclusion in an archaeological park. Compiled by: Christine Baker Date of upload: 4 February 2015
- DU011-144003 Field system
Description
Geophysical survey (Licence no. 03R095) identified a field system associated with a large ecclesiastical enclosure (DU011-144001-) truncated by the Rathbeale road. Adjacent to the north east of the enclosure the field system consists of a network of sub-rectangular enclosures. The layout of the field system respects the boundaries of the main enclosure complex and mirrors the radials or internal divisions within. A knife recovered during test excavation (Licence no. 03E1080 Ext.) of the field system is comparable to that recovered within the enclosure complex indicating a possible contemporary date of use (Baker 2010). Description
A colour vertical aerial photograph taken in 1992 (OS 8, 1526) shows a cropmark of a circular feature (diam. c. 28m) with traces of fosses radiating from the NW and E. This is probably a levelled ringfort with associated field system. Formerly located in a field of corn in a low-lying area south of the Broadmeadow River, it is now under the Applewood housing estate.
