- GA097-013 Ritual site - holy well
Description
In low-lying grassland prone to flooding. The OS Letters note that by 1839 this well was ‘dried up’ (O’Flanagan 1927, Vol. 1, 499). All that survived when it was visited is a number of limestone blocks and rubble, obscured by overgrowth. Details from The Schools’ Collection (https://www.duchas.ie/en/cbes/4583347/4581607, last accessed 20/12/2022) indicate that the site of the well was still visible and marked by a ‘round hollow’ roughly 3m in diameter and 1m deep in the 1930s. It was then already long disused and dried up, but there was still a local tradition that ‘cures were effected there’. - GA097-014001 Ringfort - rath
Description
On W-facing slope of a hillock in gently rolling grassland. An almost circular rath (30.5m E-W; 29m N-S), in fair condition, defined by two banks of earth and stone and an intervening fosse. A gap (Wth 3m) in the inner bank at S may be original. The outer bank only survives from SSW through W to N. The interior has been extensively quarried. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 6 January 2017
- GA097-014002 Enclosure
Description
On a hillock in undulating grassland. Marked on the 1838 edition of the OS 6-inch map as an irregular enclosure (c. 17m NE-SW; c. 7m NW-SE). No visible surface trace survives. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 18 July 2019
