- GA114-018 Designed landscape feature
Description
Indicated on the OS 6-inch maps as coniferous tree plantation enclosed by a field wall curving from approximately SE to NW. No visible surface trace survives. The cartographic evidence suggests it was landscape feature associated with Tulliria demesne. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 17 June 2019
- GA114-147 Ringfort - cashel
Description
In level pastureland. Classified by McCaffrey (1952, 285-6, no. 52) as a circular ‘Stone fort’ (diam. c. 46m) defined by a double-faced drystone wall. No visible surface trace survives. A later circular field wall may mirror its outline. There is a souterrain (GA114-147001-) in the interior which is planted with trees. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 7 March 2018
- GA114-147001 Souterrain
Description
Within the interior of a cashel (Ga114-147----). This inaccessible and partially collapsed drystone-built souterrain (L >19.7m; Wth 1.6m) is L-shaped in plan. The long axis runs NW-SE before turning NNE-SSW at its SE end. (McCaffrey 1952, 286, no. 52) Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 7 March 2018
- GA114-148 Designed landscape feature
Description
In level pastureland, formerly within the demesne of Tullira. Marked on the 1838 edition of the OS 6-inch map as an unenclosed roughly subcircular mixed tree plantation; on the 1921 edition it is enclosed by a wall. Described by McCaffrey (1952, 286, no. 52a) as a ‘very ruinous’ circular ‘Stone fort (?)’ (diam. c. 54m) with a tree plantation in the interior. The enclosing wall was hidden among the trees. The plantation is still evident but the enclosing wall consists of circular field wall. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted. The current evidence is insufficient to warrant accepting this as an archaeological monument; possibly a landscape feature. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 17 June 2019
