- GA103-061 Ringfort - cashel
Description
In level grassland. Poorly preserved D-shaped cashel (32m N-S; 23.5m E-W) defined by a collapsed drystone wall best preserved from SE to S. There is an entrance gap (Wth 2.3m) at SE. Field-clearance rubble has been piled against the outer wall-face at SSW. (McCaffrey 1952, 186, no. 46a) Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 18 January 2017
- GA103-062 Ringfort - cashel
Description
In level farmland. Poorly preserved subcircular cashel (diam. 28m) defined by a collapsed grassed-over drystone wall. Traces of inner stone-facing are visible at S. The interior is divided by two grassed-over stone walls, one runs from E to W and the other extends off it to N. Centrally placed is a souterrain (GA103-062001-). (Knox and Redington 1916, 184; McCaffrey 1952, 185, no. 46) Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 18 January 2017
- GA103-062001 Souterrain
Description
Centrally placed within a cashel (GA103-062001-). A plan and description of this drystone-built souterrain by Knox and Redington (1916, 184-6) indicates that it consisted of two chambers connected by a drop-hole creep. The 1st chamber (L 7.3m; Wth 5.3m) ran N-S. Its S half was filled with stone. Near the N end of the W wall the drop-hole creep and a small passageway (L 3.1m; Wth 1.3m), running E-W, lead to the 2nd chamber (L 4.7m; Wth 1.7m), which also ran N-S. Access was gained to the 1st chamber via a displaced roof lintel. On inspection, apart from a flat area of stones to the W of centre, no visible surface trace of the souterrain survived.
