- GA097-060 Standing stone
Description
On a gentle N-facing slope in cleared pastureland. Exposed limestone pavement is visible in the field to the S. Named 'Stones' in Roman script on the 1838 edition of the OS 6-inch map but not indicated. No visible surface trace survives; possibly the site of standing stones. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 16 December 2019
- GA097-061001 Ringfort - cashel
Description
On a rise in an area of rock outcrop and grassland. Poorly preserved almost circular cashel (30m N-S; 29m E-W) defined by a drystone wall of which only intermittent foundation stones survive. A gap (Wth 1.6m) flanked by two upright stones at SW is probably the original entrance. There is a souterrain (GA097-061003-) in the SW quadrant of the interior and another possible souterrain (GA097-061004-) in the SE quadrant. In the N sector are traces of a grassed-over house site (GA097-061005-). A wire fence cuts across the monument at NNW and SSW. An earthwork (GA097-061002-) lay c. 20m to the SW. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 23 January 2017
- GA097-061002 Mound
Description
Some 20m to the SW of a cashel (GA097-061----). Marked on the 3rd edition of OS 6-inch map (1933) as a circular mound (diam. c. 10m). Due to field clearance, no visible surface trace survives. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 23 January 2017
- GA097-061003 Souterrain
Description
Situated within the SW quadrant of a cashel (GA097-061----), this souterrain (L >30m) cuts through the enclosing cashel wall at SW and reappears immediately beyond it. It is irregular in plan and consists of two roughly L-shaped passages which are separated by an area of collapse. The N passage, which is situated within the cashel, runs N-S along its long axis (L 13.2m; Wth 1.1m). The short axis (L 5m) extends from its NW end and runs E-W. This passage is for the most part collapsed and filled with rubble but some roof lintels and sections of the side-walls remain intact. At the extreme SW end of the long axis a displaced side-stone suggests that the direction of the passage changed to a NE-SW direction beneath the cashel wall. It re-emerges outside the cashel wall where the intact S passage is evident. The short axis of this passage (L 3.2m) runs N-S and the longer E-W axis (L 8.5m; Wth 1.63m; H 0.98m) extends off its SW end. Present access is via a displaced lintel near S end of this section. There is also a possible souterrain (GA097-061003-) in the SE quadrant. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 23 January 2017
- GA097-061004 Souterrain
Description
Within the SE quadrant of a cashel (GA097-061----). A densely overgrown linear hollow (L 8m; 3.5m), running N-S, is possible the remains of a souterrain. It is filled with household rubbish. There is a souterrain in the SW quadrant. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 23 January 2017
- GA097-061005 House - indeterminate date
Description
In the N sector of the interior of a cashel (GA097-061----). Traces of a rectangular house site (L 8.4m; Wth 5m) are indicated by grassed-over stony banks. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 23 January 2017
- GA097-062 Ringfort - cashel
Description
On a gentle N-facing slope in grassland. Poorly preserved circular cashel (diam. 27.8m) defined by a drystone wall. A field wall cuts through it at N and SE and no visible surface trace of the enclosing element survives to the E of it. There is an entrance gap (Wth 1.8m) at SW which splays out towards the exterior. A grassed-over stony bank, running E-W, in the centre of the interior, may be the remains of an internal division. A possible souterrain (GA097-062001-) is associated. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 23 January 2017
- GA097-062001 Souterrain
Description
A 'Cave' is marked in the N sector of the interior of a cashel on the 1838 edition of the OS 6-inch map. Apart from a rubble-filled hollow (N-S; L 3m), no visible surface trace survives. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 23 January 2017
- GA097-063 Ringfort - cashel
Description
In woodland. Roughly circular cashel (diam. 35m), in fair condition, defined by a grassed-over drystone wall. A silage pit has been constructed along it at S. A souterrain (GA097-063001-) lies in the N sector of the interior, which is subdivided by a number of banks and grassed-over walls. Traces of some possible house sites are also evident. However, no clear visible surface trace survives of the rectangular building marked in the SW quadrant on the 1838 edition of the OS map 6-inch map. A small rectangular house site lies c. 3m outside the enclosing wall at E. A rath (GA097-064----) lies c. 140m to the SW. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 23 January 2017
- GA097-063001 Souterrain
Description
Within the N sector of a cashel (GA097-063----). This rectangular drystone-built souterrain (L 8.5m) runs NNW-SSE. The N end (L 3.5m; Wth 1.2m) is intact but S section (L 5m; Wth 2m) survives as a depression within which traces of the side-walls are visible. Description
Some 150m to the SW of a cashel (GA097-063----). Poorly preserved circular rath (diam. 34m) defined by a scarp. A field wall cuts through the monument at NE and SE and no visible surface trace of the enclosing element survives to the E of it. Some exposed limestone flagstones within the interior may be the roof lintels of a possible souterrain (GA097-064001-) or else natural bedrock.
