• GA084-008 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  At the S end of a NE-SW running esker ridge in gently undulating pastureland. Marked on the 1838 edition of the OS 6-inch map as an embanked enclosure (diam. c. 40m). A plan published by Knox (1918b, 113, no. 12) indicates a large enclosure (diam. c. 70m) defined by a bank from WSW through N to ENE. The central area of the interior was naturally raised. However, Cody (1989, 269-70, no. 92) classifies the monument as a ringfort. No visible surface trace survives. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 26 August 2019

• GA084-009 Enclosure - large enclosure
  Description

  On a prominent hillock in undulating pastureland. This large subcircular enclosure (112m N-S; 100m E-W) is defined by a drystone wall, best preserved fromN to ENE. A modern field wall overlies the enclosing element from ENE to ESE; from ESE to SSE no visible surface trace of it survives. Cody (1989, 171-3, no. 30) noted an entrance gap (Wth 9.5m) at W, where the wall kinks inwards. This area is now obscured by overgrowth. The interior is crossed by several modern field walls, one of which overlies an internal division in the E half of the monument. According to Knox (1918b, 110-12, no. 10), numerous human bones were found within the interior by local farmers. A souterrain (GA084-009001-) lies c. 20m to the S.   Description

  Some 20m to the S of a large enclosure (GA084-009----). A drystone-built chamber (L >6m; Wth 1.9m) runs E-W. Present access at E is via a sloping hollow with traces of drystone walling on either side. There is a blocked air vent in the end wall. • GA084-010 Enclosure
  Description

  In gently undulating pastureland. Described by Cody (1989, 294-5, no. 119) as an embanked rectangular enclosure (28m N-S; 21m E-W) built on a low rectangular platform (42m N-S; 35m E-W). Trace of a later field wall were evident along most of the E side of the platform and intermittent heaps of stone suggested that it formerly ran all round it. Possibly a ringfort or a moated site, or perhaps an even later settlement site. A ringfort (GA084-011----) lies c. 100m to the NW. • GA084-011 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In gently undulating pastureland. Marked on the 1838 edition of the OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 40m) and on the 1933 edition as a large roughly subrectangular tree plantation (c. 80m E-W; c. 77m N-S). Cody (1989) concluded that the enclosure was probably a ringfort that was subsequently planted with trees. The trees have since been removed from the interior of the plantation and no visible surface trace of the ringfort survives. The grassy bank enclosing the plantation is visible all round and numerous trees are still growing on it. Another rath (GA084-012----) lies c. 50m to the SW and there is an enclosure (GA084-010----) c. 70m to the SE. (Knox 1918b, 108, no. 8) Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 11 February 2019

  Description

  Some 50m to the SW of a rath (GA084-011----). This circular rath (diam. c. 37m), in fair condition, is defined by an earthen bank planted with a number of trees.
