- GA070-079 Enclosure
Description
In a cleared field in rough grassland and rock outcrop. Marked on 3rd ed. of OS 6-inch map (1934) as an oval hollow (c. 50m by c. 30m) overlain by a field boundary at SE. No visible surface trace survives. A probable souterrain (GA070-079001-) is associated. Though OS designation is vague, the association with a 'cave' suggests that this was probably a ringfort and souterrain. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 09 August 2010
- GA070-079001 Souterrain
Description
Associated with an enclosure (GA070-079----). The 3rd ed. of OS 6-inch map (1934) shows two small open dots in W and NW sectors of the hachured enclosure. The site is now overgrown with nettles and strewn with rubbish, and all that is visible are a number of large limestone blocks. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
- GA070-080 Battlefield
Description
On a N-facing slope in scrubland. Described on 3rd ed. of OS 6-inch map (1934) as the 'Site of Battle fought by the Lord Deputy against the Earl of Clanrickard in 1504' (see O'Flanagan 1927, Vol. 1, 217-22). The same map also depicts a small circular enclosure (GA070-080001-) visible as a low circular mound (D 10m, H 1m). According to tradition, the battle was fought between this hill and Turloughmore, 1.5km to ENE, and 'some musquet balls, and one cannon ball, was found on the side of the hill' (Holt 1910, 135). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
- GA070-080001 Earthwork
Description
In rough pastureland. A low roughly circular earthwork (diam. 10m; H 1m). The famous battle of Knockdoe (see GA070-080----) took place in this area in 1504. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 7 November 2016

- GA070-104 Ringfort - cashel
Description
On a N-facing slope in grassland. Poorly preserved oval cashel (E-W 51m, N-S 35m) defined by a drystone wall. A field wall cuts the monument at NW and SE. Gaps at W and SSE appear modern. Abutting the monument at W is a poorly preserved rectangular house (E-W; L 8m, Wth 5m) defined by a grassed-over stone wall. Two structures of similar construction and dimensions lie c. 25m to W. A ringfort (GA070-105----) lies c. 230m to NNE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010 The following image has been uploaded: GA070-104----_01.jpg
- GA070-104001 Souterrain
Description
Within the SE quadrant of a cashel (GA070-104----). According to the landowner, a roofstone of a souterrain collapsed while he was driving his tractor along the laneway that cuts through the monument. It exposed a large chamber (appox. H 2m; Wth 2m; L 5m), which was aligned N-S. Due to the danger posed to livestock resulting from the collapse, the gap was back filled with field-clearance boulders. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 10 July 2023
- GA070-105 Ringfort - cashel
Description
Some 230m NNE of a ringfort (GA070-104----). Very poorly preserved overgrown oval cashel (E-W 45m, N-S 32m) defined by a collapsed grassed-over drystone wall. A field wall cuts the monument at NNE and SSW. A children's burial ground (GA070-105001-) is visible in the NE quadrant of the interior and there is a house site (GA070-105002-) in the heavily overgrown NW quadrant. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). The following image has been uploaded: GA070-105-----01.jpg Updated by: Olive Alcock Date of revised upload: 10 July 2023
- GA070-105001 Children's burial ground
Description
In the NE quadrant of a cashel (GA070-105----). According to local information, this is the site of a children's burial ground. The interior of the cashel is almost inaccessible due to dense briar and thorn growth but several earthfast boulders (average H 0.2m; Wth 0.3m; T 0.1m) were visible as well as loose field stones. This monument was brought to our attention by Dr C. Cunniffe. The following image has been uploaded: GA070-105001-_01.jpg View of children's burial ground Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 10 July 2023
- GA070-105002 House - indeterminate date
Description
This possible house site lies in the heavily overgrown NW quadrant of a cashel (GA070-105----). It is defined by a collapsed double wall that runs towards the enclosing element at NW but the interface of the two structures is difficult to discern. The E wall (Wth 1.1m; H 0.1-0.2m) is 6.4m long and there is a short return (L 0.4m) at its S end. Otherwise no trace of the S wall survives. The W wall is more collapsed and overgrown but wall-facing is evident. This monument was brought to our attention by Dr C. Cunniffe. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 10 July 2023
- GA070-110001 Ringfort - rath
Description
In pastureland on a very slight W-facing slope, c. 500m to SW of Knockdoe Hill. This roughly oval rath (dims. 52m ENE-WSW; 40m NNW-SSE) is defined by a low poorly preserved bank of earth and stone that is bisected by a later field wall (long axis WSW-ENE) (H 1.5m; T 0.55m) off-centre to the SSE. The bank (Wth 4.3m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.3m) is worn and deeply poached by cattle from WSW to ENE and it is sod and grass covered (Wth 5.7m; int. H 0.65m; ext. H 0.35m) from ENE to WSW. There is a gap (Wth 1.9m) at NW and a wide breach (Wth 10m) from S to SSW. An internal division in the form of linear wall (L 16m; Wth 2.2m; H 0.15m) running roughly N-S is visible in the N sector. Remnants of a similar sod-covered wall are visible in the SW quadrant. Natural bedding planes of rock outcrop occur in the NE quadrant. A poorly preserved wall associated with the field system (GA070-110002-) radiates from monument at NNE and a second wall is close to it at NW. A short portion of a sod-covered stone wall extends from the ENE side, just S of the existing field wall. A house site (GA070-110004-) is evident c. 6m to the WSW. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 23 February 2017
- GA070-110002 Field system
Description
In pastureland on a very slight W-facing slope; immediately to the NNW of a rath (GA070-110001-). A series of poorly preserved earthen and stone field walls (Wth 2.85m; H 0.2-0.3m) are visible covering a roughly rectangular area c. 200m NE-SW by 180m ENE-WSW. The walls are generally linear with occasional kinks in places. Two house sites (GA070-110003- and GA070-110004-) and a hut site (GA070-110005-) may be associated. Natural rock outcrop occurs to the SE and clearance cairns are evident across whole area. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 24 February 2017
- GA070-110003 House - indeterminate date
Description
Within a field system (GA070-110002-). This house site is roughly D-shaped in plan (dims. 8m NNW-SSE straight side which has merged with low wall of field system; 5.25m ENE-WSW) and is defined by collapsed bank of earth and stone (Wth 3.8m; int. H 0.25-0.3m; ext. H 0.2-0.25m). No obvious entrance is visible due to collapse. The interior is strewn with boulders and boulders are also scattered loosely around exterior. A possible hut site (GA070-110005-) lies c. 10m to the NNE. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 24 February 2017
- GA070-110004 House - indeterminate date
Description
Located c. 6m to the WSW of a rath (GA070-110001-). This roughly subrectangular house site(dims. 8m NE-SW; 5m NW-SE) is defined by a poorly preserved earth and stone wall. Gaps (Wth 2m) are evident at NE and SE. The interior is slightly sunken but this may be due to erosion by livestock. A small rectangular annexe (dims. 4m NW-SE; 2m NE-SW) forms the NE end. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 24 February 2017
- GA070-110005 Hut site
Description
Within a field system (GA070-110002-). A small keyhole-shaped area (dims. 3.2m NE-SW; 1.6m WNW-ESE) defined by collapsed earth and stone bank (Wth. 2.2m; int. H 0.1-0.2m; ext. H 0.18-0.3m) may be the remains of a hut site. There is a narrow gap (Wth 1m) at SW and a wall (long axis WSW-ENE) associated with the field system extends from the W side of it. Stone is scattered loosely within the interior and also around the exterior. A house site (GA070-110003-) lies c. 10m to the SSW. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 24 February 2017
