• CV035-062 Crannog
  Description

  Located in deep water in the subrectangular Lough Ervey (dims c. 550m ENE-WSW; c. 180-230m NNW-SSE) close to the SW end where the lake extends N-S (dims c. 450m NNW-SSE; c. 90-100m ENE-WSW) is but this part is reduced in length from its depiction on the 1836 edition of the OS 6-inch map (L c. 630m). It is on the county boundary with Meath (ME002-007----). This s a circular overgrown cairn (diam. 24m N-S; 22m E-W; H 1.5m over water level) that has evidence of a stone kerb and wooden piles on the perimeter N-E. Some artefacts, including four early medieval pins and a late medieval pewter flagon and plate, from the crannog are now in NMI (Lucas 1958 136-7; 1960, 33).   Description

  Located at the NW end of a low NW-SE ridge. This is depicted as a D-shaped wooded enclosure cut by a NE-SW field bank at SE only on the 1836 edition of the OS 6-inch map. This is a grass-covered D-shaped area (dims c. 75m NE-SW; 40m NW-SE) that slopes down to the S. It is defined by a grass-covered earthen bank (at W: Wth of base 4m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H c. 0.8m) and an outer grass-covered fosse (at W: Wth of top 3.4m; ext. D 0.3m). It is truncated by a NE-SW field bank at SE and is not visible SE of this feature. • ME002-009 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a rise in a fairly low-lying landscape. This is a circular grass and rush-covered area (diam. 49m E-W) that slopes down to the E (H 2.2m). It is defined by an earthen bank (Wth of base 4.5-5m; int. H 0.8-1m; ext. H 2-2.3m) and hedge with an external fosse (Wth of top 3.3-3.5m; Wth of base 1-2.2m; ext. D 0.3-0.5m) that is most visible N-SE and probably absent NW-N where there is a road bank outside the rath bank. The bank has inner facing stones that might be ancient and a more modern outer facing of stones with a herring-bone pattern. The entrance (Wth of base 3.7m) and causeway (Wth of top 4.5m; H 0.4m) are at SSW.   Description

  Situated on the spine of a N-S spur, which is on the S side of an E-W drumlin ridge. This is a subcircular overgrown area (dims 38m NE-SW; 32m NW-SE) that slopes down to the S. It is defined by an earthen bank (Wth of base 5-9m; int. H 0.5-0.6m; ext. H 1.4m at N to 2.4m at S) and hedge with evidence of an external stone facing, and an outer fosse (at N: Wth of top 4.5m; Wth of base 2m; ext. D 0.4m) W-N that is reduced to a berm (at S: Wth 1m) at S. The original entrance (Wth of base 3.5m) is at SSW.   Description

  Situated in a slight col with higher ground c. 120m to the N and at Cairnhill c. 180m to the S with lower ground c. 230m to the W and c. 250m to the E where there are N-S streams that coalesce c. 700m to the S. A large roofstone (dims 3.7m x 3.4m; T 0.8m) is supported by a S portal stone (dims 1.5m x 0.4m; H 1.6m), with what may be a collapsed door stone nearby as well as two smaller upright stones (Eogan 1958, 183-4). It located just on the W side of a NNW-SSE field bank.   Description

  Situated on a slight rise between N-S streams c. 200m to the W and c. 80m to the E that conjoin c. 330m to the SSE. It is depicted as a circular embanked feature on the 1836 edition of the OS 6-inch map where it is described in gothic lettering as a ‘fort’. This is a circular area (diam. 37m E-W; 35m N-S) planted with trees, which is defined by an earthen bank (at N: Wth of base 4m; Wth of top 2.8m; int. H 1.3m; ext. H 1.3m) and external drain (ext. D 0.5m) NW-E. Elsewhere the perimeter is defined by a stone-faced scarp and a farm lane.
