Recorded monuments
- GA098-089 Earthwork
Description
In undulating pastureland. Marked on the 1838 and 1933 editions of the OS 6-inch maps as a subcircular terraced mound (c. 45m N-S; c. 38m E-W). According to local information, it was known locally as ‘Doon Hill’ and had ‘three rings’. It was extensively quarried out in the early 1980s. On inspection in April 1985 a series of banks and mounds were visible but it was not possible to determine whether these were part of the original monument or just upcast resulting from the quarrying. Current aerial imagery (Google 2019) suggests that the area has since been levelled but a change in vegetation colour indicates the area of the site. - GA098-091 Ringfort - rath
Description
On a SE-facing slope in grassland. Poorly preserved circular rath (diam. 34.5m) defined by two banks and an intervening fosse. The inner bank (Wth 4.5m-6m; int. H 0.4m-0.95m; ext. H 1.45m-1.7m) survives from NNE through E to SSW. The fosse (Wth 3m) and outer bank (Wth 2.9m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.35m) survive from NE to E. The W portion of the monument is obscured by a number of field banks. Lazy beds, running WNW-ESE, are visible within the interior. A small roughly rectangular area (L 4.8m; Wth 2.5m) defined by a stony bank in the N half may be the last vestiges of a house site. - GA098-092 Ringfort - cashel
Description
On a S-facing slope in grassland. Poorly preserved subcircular cashel (33m E-W; 31m N-S) defined by a low grassed-over drystone wall. At WSW the wall projects outwards where there is a gap (Wth 8.7m); this appears to be original. A field wall cuts across the monument from NNE to S. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 8 December 2017
- GA098-093 Ringfort - rath
Description
In undulating grassland. This poorly preserved oval rath (c. 40m N-S; c. 28m E-W) is defined by a low bank, except from NW to NE where a scarp forms the enclosing element. Later field banks may overlie the bank from NE to S and from W to NW. There is a large gap (Wth 7.2m) at S. A small subcircular grassed-over stony mound within the centre of the interior may be the remains of a hut site (GA098-093002-). A number of field banks (GA098-093001-) to the S may also be associated. There is a cashel c. 200m to the WNW. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 4 March 2019
- GA098-093001 Field system
Description
About 5m to SSE, S and SSW of the rath (GA098-093----), three grassed-over stony banks, varying in length from 23.8m at SSE to 51.8m at SSW, are visible. They may be associated with the rath. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 4 March 2019
