Recorded monuments
- GA104-161 Ringfort - cashel
Description
In pastureland in and area of undulating drumlin countryside. This poorly preserved subcircular cashel (21.5m N-S; 19m E-W) is defined by a partially grassed-over stone spread but inner and outer-facing stones are visible intermittently giving a wall thickness of 2.1m at NE. Here the wall is only 0.1-0.2m high. The perimeter is overgrown with thorn bushes from S through W to NW where a later field wall has been built on top of the inner wall-face of the cashel. Field-clearance material has been dumped against the wall at W. Another cashel (GA104-162----) lies c. 110m to the SW. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 11 January 2018
- GA104-162 Ringfort - cashel
Description
In pastureland overlooking Lough Kinlea to the S. Marked on the 1838 and 1933 editions of the OS 6-inch maps as a subcircular hachured enclosure (c. 28m N-S; c. 26m E-W). On the 1933 edition rock outcrop is depicted in the interior. Classified by McCaffrey (1952, 234, no. 82a) as a 'very ruinous ... Earthen fort'. When inspected in February 1983 a roughly circular area of earth and boulders was visible but most of this material appeared to be clearance from the neighbouring field walls completing obscuring the monument. On a revisit in October 2001 the condition of the monument was still the same. It is possible that this is a cashel considering that it is located in an area of outcropping rock. Another cashel (GA104-161----) lies c. 110m to the NE. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 11 January 2017
- GA104-163 Barrow - ring-barrow
Description
On an esker ridge overlooking lower land to the S. This circular ring-barrow (diam. 19m), in fair condition, consists of a central mound (diam. 8.8m; H 0.65-0.9m) surrounded by a fosse and external bank. McCaffrey (1952, 27, no. 84) noted one stone slab set on edge near the centre of the monument and another possible one nearby; no visible surface trace of these survive. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 14 August 2019
