Description
Situated on the tip of a short SE-NW spur. In 1968 this was described (SMR file) as a circular grass and rush-covered area (diam. 35.4m N-S; 35.3m E-W) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (Wth of base 4m at N to 8m at S; int. H 0.6-0.9m; ext. H 1.1-1.4) and an outer fosse (at N: Wth of top 5m; Wth of base 1.6m; ext. D 0.4m), with a slight outer bank (Wth of base 5.8m; ext. H 0.1m) NNW-NE. The original entrance (Wth of base 1.1m) is at SE. The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). Description
Situated just SE of the summit of a NW-SE ridge that is at the SE edge of a broad plateau, it is described as ‘Dunroe’ - the red fort on the OS 6-inch maps. This is a circular grass and rush-covered area (diam. 29m NNW-SSE; 28.5m E-W) that slopes down to the S (H 1.5m). It is defined by an earthen bank (Wth of base 7m; int. H 0.9-1.1m; ext. H 2.3m at S to 3.1m at N) with some bushes separated by a fosse (Wth of top 9.5-10.5m; Wth of base 2-3m; ext. D 1m at S to 2.6m at N) from an outer bank (Wth of base 4m at S to 8m at N; ext. H 0.8m at S to 2.2m at N). There is a second external fosse (Wth of top 10m; ext. D 0.9m at N) W-N. The original entrance through the inner (Wth of base 1.4m) and outer (Wth of base 2.3m) banks with evidence of stone-ling and a causeway (Wth of top 2,6m; H 0.4m) is at SE. The outer bank becomes a double bank around the entrance, and the inner bank is noticeably interned at this point. Description
Located towards the SE end of a NW-SE ridge. This is a circular grass-covered area (diam. 28.8m N-S; 27.9m E-W) defined by a slight grass-covered bank (at S: Wth of base 3.7m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.9m) that is largely reduced to a scarp (at NE: Wth 2.5m; H 0.7m), but the perimeter is incorporated into a field bank W-N. There is no visible fosse, and the ramp entrance (Wth of base 1.6m) is at S. Archaeological testing (21E0430) by M. McCormick c. 45m to the E at the closest point produced no related material (excavations.ie 2021:205). Description
Situated on a NW-SE ridge, it is described as ‘Sallow Fort’ on the OS 6-inch maps. This is a circular, slightly domed and grass-covered area (diam. 30m N-S; 29m E-W) defined by a fosse (at SSE: Wth of top 5.8m; Wth of base 1m; int. D 1m; ext. D 0.9m: 3.2m) and an overgrown outer bank (at SSE: Wth of base 7.5m; ext. H 0.6m), best preserved SSE-SW but visible all around. At NNE the bank is reduced (Wth 6m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.3m) and the berm is reduced to a berm (Wth 4m). There is a line of boulders (L 6.2m) on the edge of the platform at S and an entrance (Wth 2.9m) through the outer bank at SE. The interior is bisected by a NE-SW field bank with a drain on the SE side. Description
Situated towards the bottom of a SW-facing slope with a small E-W stream circling around it SE-SW c. 60m distant. This is a circular grass and scrub-covered area (diam. 31m N-S; 28.5m WNW-ESE) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (at ESE: Wth of base 5m; int. H 0.9m; ext. H 1.5m) that melds into the hillslope NW-NE, with a fosse (at ESE: Wth of top 6.4m; ext. D 1m) ESE-S-W. The original entrance (Wth of base 1.8m) is at SSE, and the rath is surrounded by field banks NE-S-SW.
