  Description

  Towards the bottom of a gentle S-facing slope of a broad NW-SE ridge. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 28m N-S; 28m E-W) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (Wth 4m; int. H 0.15m at S to 1m at N (upslope); ext. H 1.1m). There is an entrance (Wth 2m) at E, but no trace of a fosse. There is a NNE-SSW field bank and hedge outside the perimeter at W. • RO034-080004 Cross
  Description

  At St Patrick's well (RO034-080010-), c. 80m W of Oran church (RO034-080001-) and on the W side of N-S section of the N 60 road. A limestone Latin cross (H 0.8m; Span 0.5m; T 0.2m) on a drystone plinth (dims 1.3m x 1.4m; H 0.4m) SW of the well has an incised inscription and the date1729 on one face, while the socket of a finial cross (RO034-080013-) is on the bank around the well at the roadside (Mullin 1987). The cross is inscribed: PRAY FOR THE SOUL OF / CATHERINE O / CONNOR AF (T)IR / DERMOTROE / WHO CAUSES / Ye MONUMENT / TO BE MADE IN / HONNOUR OF / GOD & S / PATRICK / 1729 Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010

• RO034-080008 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Towards the bottom of a SW-facing slope at the SE end of a broad NW-SE ridge. This is a D-shaped grass-covered area (dims 33.6m NNE-SSW; 26m WNW-ESE) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 2-2.3m; int. H 0.2-0.3m; ext. H 0.7-0.9m) SW-N-NE, and by straight scarps at E (H 0.5m) at E-S. There is an outer grass-covered fosse (Wth 2-3m; D 0.1-0.3m) which probably incorporates a stream from the holy well (RO034-080009-) which was at the NE angle of the rath and which is replaced by a pump-house. • RO034-080009 Ritual site - holy well
  Description

  Towards the bottom of a gentle S-facing slope at the SE end of a broad NW-SE ridge, and just NE of rath (RO034-0800008-). It is marked only on the 1929 ed. of the OS 6-inch map where it is described in gothic lettering as a ‘Holy Well’. • RO034-080010 Ritual site - holy well
  Description

  Traditionally established by St Patrick (Stokes 1887b, 107), the well is situated in a triangular plot (max. dims 22m N-S; 18m E-W) towards the bottom of a SW-facing slope at the S end of a broad NW-SE ridge. It is on the W side of a N-S section of the N 60 Castlerea-Roscommon road and c. 80m SW of the church (RO034-080001-). This is a rectangular well (int. dims 2.1m NW-SE; 2.1m NE-SW) defined by a stone wall (T 0.6m; int. H 1.4m; ext. H 0.2m) with a stream running off to the SW through a small rectangular pool (dims 1m x 1.2m). The well is within a rectangular enclosure (int. dims 8m NE-SW; 7.65m NW-SE) defined by the foundations of a wall (T 0.65-1m; H 0.2m), and three steps lead down to the stream on each side of the stream outside the enclosure. A limestone plaque (RO034-080012-) on the inner face of the well has an inscription in false relief commemorating Fr. William Hanley who renovated the well in 1687. A limestone Latin cross (RO034-080004-) (H 0.8m; Span 0.5m; T 0.2m) on a drystone-built plinth (dims 1.3m x 1.4m; H 0.4m) has an incised inscription and the date1729, while the socket of a finial cross (RO034-080013-) is on the bank at the roadside. The well also had a connection with Lughnasa in early August (Anon 1992; Beirne 2000, 290). Another possible holy well (RO034-080009-) is c. 70m to the NW.   Description

  St Patrick's well (RO034-0800010-) is on a SW-facing slope on the W side of a N-S section of the N 60 Castlerea-Roscommon road and c. 80m W of the church (RO034-080001-). The well has a limestone plaque on the inner face of the NE wall which has an inscription in false relief commemorating Fr. William Hanley who renovated the well in 1687 (Beirne 2000, 290). The inscription reads: Pray for the soul of Fr. William Hanley who caused this monument to be made in ye honour of God and St Patrick of Ireland. Anno Domini IHS 1684.   At the bottom of the S-facing slope at the SE end of a NW-SE ridge. There is what appears to be a hollow way (L c. 100m) running NE from the NE corner of the moated site (RO034-083----) towards the church of Oran (RO034-080001-) visible on aerial photograph (CUCAP AVH 72) from c. 1973. • RO034-083 Moated site
  Description

  In a low-lying position with NW-SE ridges to the N and S. This is a rectangular grass-covered area (dims 70m E-W; 54m N-S) defined by flat-bottomed moats (Wth of base 8.5-9.7m; int. D 0.7-0.85m; ext. D 0.5-1m) and outer banks (Wth 2-2.8m; ext. H 0.1-0.75m), which have been removed at W and towards the E end of the N side. The interior is overlain by two N-S field walls, but field banks are connected to the outer bank at the NE and SE corners, including what may have been part of a roadway (RO034-082001-), now removed, but visible on aerial photographs (CUCAP: AVH 72), running NE (L c. 100m) towards Oran church (RO034-080001-) c. 500m to the NE. Archaeological testing (04E1497) c. 30m to SW failed to produce any related archaeological material (Delany 2007a).   Marked as an enclosure (diam. c. 40m) on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map and visible as a feature on aerial photographs (GSIAP: M 9,10). It is situated on the N-facing slope of a WNW-ESE ridge. This is a D-shaped grass-covered area (dims 35m N-S; 30.5m E-W) defined by a scarp (H 0.2-0.4m), with slight traces of a fosse (Wth 3m; D 0.2m) at S. It has been truncated by a field bank at W.   Description

  At the E end of a low E-W ridge, on the NE-facing slope. Subcircular grass-covered area (dims 51.8m N-S; 42.6m E-W) defined by a grass-covered earthen bank (Wth 4.5-5.6m; int. H 0.25-0.45m; ext. H 1.2-1.5m), with a rounded fosse (Wth of top 5.7-6.4m; Wth of base 1.9-2.2m; D 0.15-0.3m) SW-NNE. The monument is overlain by a N-S field wall E of the centre, and the perimeter E of this is reduced to a scarp (H 1.2m). There is no identifiable original entrance.   Description

  Marked as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 35m) on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map and as the N fragment of an enclosure on the 1929 ed. Situated on the gentle W-facing slope. D-shaped grass-covered area (dims 26.5m NW-SE; 23m NE-SW) defined by a grass-covererd earthen bank (Wth 3.2m; int. H 0.25m; ext. H 0.6m) NW-N and a scarp (H 0.3m) N-E. It is bisected by an NW-SE field wall and townland boundary with Cloonycolgan, and does not survive S of this. There is no visible fosse or identifiable original entrance.   Description

  On a fairly level landscape. Circular grass-covered area (diam. c. 38m NNE-SSW; 36.5m WNW-ESE) defined by a scarp (H 0.3-1m). It is slightly truncated by a N-S field bank at W, and the perimeter has been quarried at NE and SW. There is no visible fosse or identifiable original entrance. • RO034-089 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  On the gentle N-facing slope. Subcircular grass and scrub-covered area (dims 32.7m N-S; 29.1m E-W) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (Wth 5.4-6m; int. H 0.4-0.6m; ext. H 2.6m) WSW-N separated by a complete fosse (Wth of top 9.3-9.8m generally to 14m at E; Wth of base 2.7-4.8m; D 1.8-2.3m) from an overgrown flat-topped outer bank (Wth of base 4.7-5m; Wth of top 1.4-1.8m; H 0.7-1.3m). The inner bank is quarried at S and there are gaps in the outer bank at W (Wth 2m), WNW (Wth 0.9m) N (Wth 7m), NNE (Wth 5m) and NE (Wth 5m), but the probable entrance is a gap (Wth 2.5m) in the outer bank at SE. Archaeological testing (06E0570) c. 70m to the S failed to produce any related archaeological material (Rooney 2009).
