• MO009-044 Burial ground
  Description

  Situated on the W-facing slope of a drumlin. A small triangular area (dims c. 50m E-W; c. 50m N-S at E) with the apex at W between the main road from Monaghan to Castleshane (N2) and a minor road off it to the NE is described in italic lettering as a ‘Grave Yard’ only on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map. The area to the E became the location where St Macarthan’s Roman Catholic Cathedral was built in 1861-92 under Bishops Mac Nally and James Donnelly to a design of James Joseph McCarthy in the gothic revival style (McKenna 1920, 1, 110-17). No visible evidence of the graveyard survives. It may have been attached to the Roman Catholic chapel of Latlorcan which was c. 450m to the SE, although no reference is made to it (Moriarty 2012). Architectural heritage

• Bridge, 1835–1845 · Regional interest
  Description

  Single-arch limestone canal bridge and adjacent stone culvert, built c.1840, carrying access lane from Asylum Farm over Ulster Canal and towpath and sluiceway short distance south of seventeenth lock to small roadway and associated farmland to south-east. Parapet walls of roughly squared rubble with heavy, flat capping stones having rounded arrises and punch-finished surface. Square piers having heavy flat stone caps terminate each corner of parapets. Projecting square string course separates parapet from spandrels which have same construction as parapet walls. Segmental arch has punch-finished ashlar voussoirs and stone arch soffit over canal and towpath which is on ashlar sandstone raised eastern bank of canal. Both elevations obscured by ivy and trees growing on embankments either side of disused canal. Tree growth and ivy restricts views of some parts of bridge and top surface overgrown with grass with no evidence of hard surfacing or drainage. Barrel-vaulted ashlar stone culvert over sluiceway just east of canal bridge. Abutment walls are reinforced with concrete and culvert provides channel under earthen bank.

• Lock keeper's house, 1835–1845 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached three-bay single-storey building, constructed c.1840, having canted porch to west, canal-front, elevation. Pitched slate roof with black clay ridge tiles, smooth rendered decagonal brick chimneystack and remains of half-round cast-iron rainwater goods previously held on overhanging eaves, timber soffit of which is supported by carved timber brackets. Roughly squared rubble walling with punch-finished ashlar to canted entrance bay, other window surrounds and projecting base plinth. Visible openings square-headed. All windows, which have stone sills, and door openings, closed with concrete blocks. House partially concealed under heavy ivy overgrowth and trees growing beside but was occupied until at least mid-twentieth century. Fronts onto Ulster Canal short distance south of Seventeenth Lock on roughly surfaced lane.

• Saint Louis Convent, building misc, 1925–1935 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached cruciform-plan concert hall, built 1930, having gable-fronted entrance to south-west; main south-west-north-east spine being single-storey over raised basement and having seven-bay sides, south-western end bays projecting slightly; rear cross block being three-storey with three-bay gables and returns to latter, and with dingle-bay slightly projecting middle bay to north-east. Four-bay single-storey toilet block recessed to south-east side of entrance gable. Pitched slate roof with terracotta ridge tiles, moulded eaves course, cut-stone kneelers and copings to gables, and cast-iron rainwater goods. Rock-faced limestone masonry with ashlar quoins and window surrounds. Relief emblem to upper entrance gable, within oval panel with hood-moulding having panelled stops and moulded sill. Square-headed window openings throughout, tripartite to north-east middle bay, with block-and-start ashlar surrounds, stone sills and with two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows to all parts except basement level, hall proper and toilet block which have casement windows. Main entrance comprises three square-headed door openings with deep moulded stone surrounds with carved fleur-de-lys detail to soffits, and double-leaf timber panelled doors with overlights having stained-glass margins, all set within carved stone frame with square panels to top corners, and approached by flight of stone steps with metal railings. Connected to main convent buildings and adjacent structure via series of glazed walkways and forming part of the Saint Louis Convent complex.

• Store/warehouse, 1835–1840 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached eight-bay two-storey limestone-built former canal store, built c.1838. Now in use as school sports hall (McCarthy Hall), with gable-fronted entrance porch to middle of north elevation. Single-storey lean-to addition of c.1990 to same elevation. Pitched slate roof, with stone chimneystack, and cast-iron and some replacement aluminium rainwater goods. Squared rubble masonry walls with sandstone ashlar quoins and window surrounds. Square-headed window openings with block-and-start ashlar surrounds, stone sills and fixed six-pane metal-framed windows. Wider segmental-headed window opening to upper part of east gable. Square-headed door openings with block-and-start ashlar surrounds and tongue-and-groove timber battened doors. Blocked segmental-arch former vehicular openings to both long walls set into square-headed recesses and flanked by pedestrian doorways, one blocked. Building attached, via recent link, to three-bay two-storey ancillary building to north-west that appears to be former dwelling house of nineteenth-century date, having catslide porch to north-west end of front, pitched slate roof, rubble walls, and square-headed openings, ground floor windows now blocked up. South elevation of former canal store fronts onto disused Ulster Canal, adjacent to road/canal bridge at Dawson Street. Buildings are part of Saint Louis Convent complex.

  Description

  Wall-mounted cast-iron post box, erected c.1906, of WB87/2 Victorian Type C with royal insignia of Edward VII, and crown motif. Letter opening sheltered by sloped panel with POST OFFICE cast on top, over door which has slot for collection time notices to top, lock and small cast door handle below. Moulded architrave to outer edge of box and manufacturer's mark 'W.T. Allen & Co. London', is cast below door. Set into smooth cement rendered gate pier outside Elim Pentecostal Church.

  Description

  Abandoned section of Ulster Canal, built c.1839, consisting of approximately 360m of overgrown, stagnant channel from partially visible stone culvert under replacement bridge supporting Dawson Street at west end, to replacement timber sluice just before now filled-in tunnel beneath Old Cross Square at east end.

  Description

  Former Ulster Canal tunnel, built c.1830, running east-west under Old Cross Square. Now disused and largely obscured by vegetation. Segmental arch to west end, with squared, tooled stone voussoirs, squared stonework to vault, and squared rubble to parapet. Similar parapet to east end.

  Wall-mounted cast-iron post box with hinged door, installed c.1880, set into smooth-rendered boundary wall pier. Moulded margin surround, projecting letter slot with raised lettering 'POST OFFICE', royal insignia of Victoria, and crown motif to upper section, and with foundry name 'W.T. Allen & Co. London' to base. Sited at road junction at south-east side of Monaghan town centre.

  Description

  Detached terrace of three two-storey former gasworks workers' houses, built c.1890, with adjoining modern sheds to north and south. Now in use as store. Northern end house two-bay with one first floor window, middle is three-bay, and southern is three-bay with one first floor opening. Pitched natural slate roof with grey clayware ridge tiles, red brick chimneystacks with string course and terracotta pots, and replacement rainwater goods. Coursed squared rubble walls, with red brick to north gable. Square-headed window openings with chamfered tooled, grooved block-and-start surrounds, lintels and sills, and six-over-six pane horned timber sliding sash windows. Square-headed door openings with similar detailing and having timber panelled and one timber battened door, with overlights.

  Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c.1800, with later second floor and later flat-roofed porch to front, and with single and two-bay three-storey returns to rear. Pitched slate roof with hooped terracotta ridge tiles, roughcast rendered chimneystacks with polygonal pots, and replacement rainwater goods. Roughcast rendered walls with block-and-start rendered quoins, dentillated string course to level of original eaves. Square-headed window openings with painted sills and replacement uPVC windows. Square-headed replacement uPVC door opening to porch. Set within own grounds, with two-storey outbuilding to rear having pitched corrugated-iron roof and roughcast rendered walls.

Main gateway to west comprising wrought-iron screen and gates mounted on square-plan carved stone piers with carved stone plinth base surmounted by square-plan piers with recessed panel carvings, octahedral-plan stone coping, caps, and cross finials. Gates comprising vertical square spars, with alternate spars twisted, wrought-iron square panels to lower section forming quadrate cross with diagonal spars incorporating fleur-de-lys detail, and central rosette, square-plan carved outer piers to central gateway with dressed and carved square-plan plinth bases, chamfered central section surmounted by octahedral stone caps, with vehicular gateways to north and south of west boundary comprising double-leaf wrought-iron gates with vertical square spars surmounted by bud finials, and quatrefoil lower panels with diagonal spars formed by exuding fleur-de-lys detail, with vehicular gates mounted on stone piers comprising dressed and carved square plinth bases with chamfered central section, surmounted by octahedral-plan stone caps. Recessing vehicular gateway to north of Saint Macartan's Cathedral boundary with central dressed stone piers comprising carved square plinth bases with chamfered central section, surmounted by triangular pitched stone caps with carved quatrefoil detail, surmounted by double-leaf wrought-iron gates comprising vertical spars, surmounted by bud finials to lower section, quatrefoil panels with stemmed floral finials within, scroll and fleur-de-lys wrought-iron finials to top spar and central cross finial, working hinges and latch mechanisms; identical single pedestrian gate to west of gateway; walls to gateway comprising dressed coursed rough-faced rubble walls surmounted by ashlar saddle-back coping, surmounted by wrought-iron railings with vertical spars surmounted by alternating fleur-de-lys and bud finials of wrought iron. Boundary walls to site comprising squared rough-face rubble walls surmounted by ashlar saddle-back coping. Single pedestrian gateway to shrine at south-east of site comprising square-plan ashlar plinth bases and piers surmounted by triangular pitched stone caps, single wrought-iron gate comprising vertical spars with scroll and fleur-de-lys wrought-iron finials to top spar, and working hinges and latch mechanisms. Single pedestrian gateway to north-west of site comprising ashlar plinth bases and piers surmounted by carved quatre-gabled caps with carved trefoil detail to tympanum, single wrought-iron gate comprising vertical spars with scroll and fleur-de-lys wrought-iron finials to top spar, and working hinges and latch mechanisms. Central section, surmounted by triangular pitched stone caps, single wrought-iron gate comprising vertical spars with scroll and fleur-de-lys wrought-iron finials to top spar, and working hinges and latch mechanisms. Wall and gates form curtilage to Saint Macartan's Cathedral sited to south-east of Monaghan Town. Constitutes part of ecclesiastical grouping, including gate lodge, cathedral, and bishop's house.

  Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c.1920, with stepped plan, having flat-roofed windbreak to entrance bay, and having half-octagonal projection to one re-entrant angle, bowed window to rear, and recent single-storey flat-roofed extension. Hipped natural slate roofs with sprocketed eaves, grey clayware ridge-tiles, roughcast rendered chimneystacks with terracotta pots, cast-iron profile guttering and downpipes. Roughcast rendered walls. Square-headed window openings with timber casement windows to front and side elevations, leaded panes to window over entrance and to window in half-octagonal projection, and with replacement uPVC windows to rear. Square-headed door opening flanked by engaged columns supporting moulded cornice, chamfered reveals to doorway, and herringbone-glazed timber door with step. Set within own grounds with boundary wall to front of property comprising roughcast rendered wall with stepped coping.

Roughcast rendered walls with block-and-start quoins. Square-headed window openings with painted smooth-rendered surrounds and replacement double-glazed two-over-two pane horned timber sliding sash windows. Elliptical-headed door opening with leaded-glass overlight and sidelights. Set back from road within own grounds with smooth-rendered gateway to north comprising smooth-rendered wall and piers surmounted by stepped coping.
