Recorded monuments
- MO028-097 Ringfort - rath
Description
Located on the W shoulder, but not the summit of an E-W drumlin ridge. This monument is depicted on McCrea’s Map of County Monaghan (1793). It is a subcircular grass and scrub-covered area (dims 29m ENE-WSW; 25.5m NNW-SSE) defined by a furze-covered earthen bank (Wth 7-7.5m; int. H 0.5-1m; ext. H 1.7-2.2m) separated by an overgrown fosse (Wth of top 6.5-7m; Wth of base 1.5-2m; D 0.5-1.2m) from an outer bank (Wth 4.2-5.2m; ext. H 0.8-1.2m). There is a modern entrance through both banks at NE, but the entrance through the inner (Wth of base 1.6m) and outer (Wth of base 1.6m) banks at WSW with a causeway (Wth of top 4.5m; H 0.5m) is the original entrance. Small banks on either side of the causeway are probably secondary. There is a hollow (dims 6.3m NW-SE; 3m NE-SW; D 0.35m) inside the inner bank at NW, which may be modern, as might the evidence of stone facing to the inner face of the inner bank. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revision: 8 December 2017

Description
Located towards the top of the SW-facing slope of a short NW-SE drumlin ridge. This is a circular grass and scrub-covered area (diam. 28m NE-SW; 25.6m NW-SE) that slopes down to the SW (H 2.6m). It is defined by an earthen bank (at NE: Wth 6.6m; int. H 1.8m; ext. H 1m) with some bushes and an outer fosse (at NE: Wth of top 4.2m; ext. D 0.4m) but the bank is reduced to a scarp (at SW: Wth 4m; H 2.3m) SE-S-NW and the fosse is absent SE-W-N. The lower part (H 1.1m) of the scarp was incorporated into a field bank S-NW and protected with a stone facing. There is a wide entrance (Wth of base 4m) at SSE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revision: 8 December 2017

Description
Situated at the SE end of a NW-SE drumlin ridge. This is a grass and scrub-covered circular area (diam. 27.2m NNW-SSE; 26.4m ENE-WSW) that slopes down to the S (H 2.4m). It is defined by a grass-covered earthen bank (Wth 3.8-5.2m; int. H 0.3m at SSE to 1.2m at NNW) with some bushes. There are slight traces of an outer fosse, although it is probably re-cut (Wth of top 3.4m; Wth of base 0.8m; D 0.4m) at NE. There is a large grass-covered hollow (dims 6.5m x 5.4m; D 0.8m) inside the bank at SW. The only entrance gap (Wth of base 2.2m) is at NW. A NNW-SSE field bank and townland boundary with Cashlan East cuts the monument towards the NE edge. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revision: 8 December 2017
