Description
Discovered in 2002 and subsequently excavated in 2003 in advance of the construction of the N8 Rathcormac-Fermoy Bypass. Nineteen pits, eight post-holes, six stake-holes, and a range of cultivation furrows were discovered. There was no apparent pattern to the post- and stake-holes, many of which occurred in isolation. A concentration of twelve small pits (av. diam. 0.3m; av. D 0.3m) with similar dimensions was recorded towards the S end of the excavated area. These pits contained heat-shattered stone. Three pieces of metal slag were recovered from one of the pits. (O'Connell 2006j, 68) The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009
