• WA031-040005 Religious house - Augustinian friars
  Description

  Situated on the E side of the Colligan estuary c. 400m from Dungarvan castle (WA031-040001-). An Augustinian abbey was founded c. 1290 by Thomas Fitzmaurice Fitzgerald. By the Suppression in 1541 it served as a parish church and it was in ruins by 1654. The remains consist of the chancel and crossing-tower within a subrectangular graveyard (dims. c. 50-80m E-W; c. 60m NE-SW) defined by a masonry wall, with the sea on the E side. The tower is incorporated into the modern St Augustine's RC church which is built on the site of the N transept. The chancel (int. dims. 13.5m E-W; 6.25m N-S) survives complete with a large window in the E gable and three pointed windows in the S wall, all of which are destroyed. There are numerous putlog holes in the walls. A small rectangular window survives above the E window, with a round-arched doorway in the N wall and traces of a triple sedilia in the S wall. The graveslab of Donald McGrath is set in the ground in this doorway. The four-storey tower at the transept is complete (H c. 16m) with an external string course over the second floor. There is a groin vault over the ground floor and the remains of newel stairs are visible at the NW angle of the first floor. Three lights survive at second-floor level and the third level, or belfry stage, has tall single-light, ogee-headed opes in the N and E walls, with similar double opes in the S and W walls. Some architectural fragments (WA031-040008-) in the graveyard indicated that it had a cloister arcade. The 15th century graveslab of Donald McGrath (WA031-040029-) is set in the ground in the chancel doorway, while an armorial plaque (WA031-040030-) and stone head (WA031-040031-) are set in the outer face of the W wall of the modern church.   Description

  Adjacent to the site of an Augustinian abbey (WA031-040005-) and known as 'McGrath's Castle' with references dating from 1618. It was described by J. O'Donovan c. 1840 (O'Flanagan 1929, 45) as a square building (dims. c. 11.5m E-W; c. 9.5m N-S) of six storeys. Photographs from c. 1900 in the Lawrence collection (NLI, 3597 W.L.) and local collections confirm this and show two vaults with portions of the bawn wall surviving at the roadside.   Archaeological testing (02E1727) in an extensive area NW of the Augustinian priory (WA031-040005-) in Abbeyside has recorded extensive medieval remains in three fields. This comprises hearths, ditches and pits associated with medieval pottery. Close to the tower house (WA031-040006-) known as McGrath's castle the ditches are particuarly numerous and may form an enclousure SW of the castle, although no dating material was recoverd.   Detached four-bay double-height rubble stone single-cell Catholic church, built 1832, incorporating fabric of earlier medieval Augustinian priory, c.1280, on site with single-bay four-stage tower, c.1450, to south on a square plan extending into remains of three-bay single-storey rubble stone nave to east, and single-bay single-storey sacristy to north. Renovated, 1894. Renovated, c.1995. Pitched slate roofs with clay ridge tiles, rendered chimney stack, sproketed eaves, and replacement uPVC rainwater goods, c.1995, on overhanging rendered eaves. Roof to tower not visible behind parapet. Pitched roof to nave to medieval range now gone. Random rubble stone walls with cut-stone stringcourse to top stage to tower, and rubble stone crow-stepped parapet. Pointed-arch window openings to nave with replacement concrete sills, c.1995, cut-granite block-and-start surrounds, and replacement fixed-pane windows, c.1995, having leaded stained glass panels. Pointed-arch door opening to tower with cut-limestone chamfered surround, replacement tongue-and-groove timber panelled double doors, c.1995, sidelights, and overlight. Ogee-headed openings to top (bell) stage to tower with cut-limestone surrounds, and louvered panel fittings. Square-headed openings to sacristy with replacement concrete sills, c.1995, replacement timber casement windows, c.1995, and replacement tongue-and-groove timber panelled door, c.1995. Interior to first stage to tower with ribbed groin vaulted ceiling. Full-height interior to nave with carved timber pews, gallery to first floor to south, decorative plasterwork detailing to altar, and tongue-and-groove timber panelled ceiling having exposed timber construction on corbels. Extended, c.1950, comprising single-bay single-storey recessed end bay to south-east possibly incorporating fabric of earlier outbuilding, c.1800, with single-bay single-storey flat-roofed porch added to front. Refenestrated, c.1975. Pitched roof with reed thatch in English style having rope work to ridge, rendered squat chimney stacks, and rendered coping. Pitched corrugated-asbestos roof to end bay with concrete ridge tiles, rendered squat chimney stack, rendered coping, and cast-iron rainwater goods. Flat roof to porch not visible behind parapet. Painted rendered walls possibly over mud wall or rubble stone construction with rendered stringcourse to porch having battlemented parapet over. Hipped roof (gabled to attic windows) with replacement slate, c.1990, clay ridge tiles, and replacement uPVC rainwater goods, c.1990, on timber eaves. Random rubble stone walls repointed, c.1990, with cement ribbon pointing having irregular coursed squared rubble stone section to carriageway, and cut-stone coping to parapet to linking bay. Triangular-headed window openings remodelled, c.1990, with replacement concrete sills, c.1990, and replacement uPVC casement windows, c.1990. Segmental-headed carriageway remodelled, c.1990, with replacement uPVC panelled door, c.1990, having rendered overpanel with cast-iron plaque. Square-headed door opening to linking bay with cut-granite block-and-start surround, and replacement tongue-and-groove timber panelled door, c.1990.

Hipped slate roof (half-polygonal to canted bay window) with red clay ridge tiles (decorative to ridge) having terracotta finials, red brick Running bond chimney stacks, and cast-iron rainwater goods on rendered eaves. Unpainted rendered walls with rendered channelled piers to ends, and cut-limestone stringcourse to first floor. Square-headed window openings with rendered sills, and 1/1 timber sash windows. Round-headed opening to open internal porch with moulded rendered surround, and decorative clay tile to step. Square-headed door opening with glazed timber panelled door having sidelights, and overlights with leaded stained glass panels. Set back from line of road with unpainted roughcast boundary wall to forecourt having decorative cast-iron railings over, and cast-iron chamfered piers with cast-iron gate.
