- GA095-123 Ringfort - cashel
Description
In gently undulating pastureland. Poorly preserved and heavily denuded circular cashel (diam. 33m) defined by the basal courses of a collapsed and grassed-over drystone wall (Wth 2.4m; ext. H 0.7m). (Athy 1914, 133; McCaffrey 1952, 141, no. 8) Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 3 April 2018
- GA095-124 Ringfort - rath
Description
In rough pastureland. Circular rath (diam. 47.3m), in fair condition, defined by two banks and an intervening fosse. The inner bank is visible all round and some internal stone revetment is visible at SSE. The fosse survives apart from a section at E where a later NNW-SSE running field wall clips the monument. The outer bank is visible from NW to NE and from SSE to W. Numerous gaps in both banks appear to be modern. (Athy 1914, 133; McCaffrey 1952, 141-2, no. 9) Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 3 April 2018
- GA095-125 Ringfort - rath
Description
On a SE-facing slope in undulating grassland. Described by McCaffrey (1952, 142, no. 10) as a rath defined by two banks and an intervening fosse. No visible surface trace of the outer bank survives. The inner bank is visible throughout and is defined by a bank of earth and stone (diam. 47m). Traces of internal stone-facing are visible at S. The fosse survives from SSE through S to WNW. There is a souterrain (GA095-125001-) in the NW quadrant of the interior. (Athy 1914, 133) Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 3 April 2018
- GA095-125001 Souterrain
Description
Within the NW quadrant of a rath (GA095-125----). This drystone-built souterrain (L >16.4m) consists of two/three chambers and a creep. The 1st chamber (L 8.2m; Wth 1.8m; H 1.65m) runs NW-SE. Access is gained through a breach in the roof at SE. From the breach the chamber extends for 6.6m to the NW. It continues for a further 1.6m to the SE as a shallow depression. A partially blocked creep (H 0.6m; Wth 0.52m; accessible L 1.16m), running at a right angle to this chamber, is evident at the N end of the E side-wall. It suggests the presence of another chamber. Some 9.8m NW of the 'entrance' to the 1st chamber another modern breach gives access to the 2nd chamber (L 6.6m; Wth 1.6m) which runs N-S. Again from the point of entry the chamber survives intact to the N for a length of 5.4m; a depression at S indicates its continuance for a further 1.2m. (Athy 1914, 133; McCaffrey 1952, 142, no. 10) Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 3 April 2018
