  Description

  Located at the crest of a SW-facing slope. This is a circular grass-covered area (diam. 31m NW-SE: 28.5m NE-SW) planted with some deciduous trees and defined by an earthen bank (Wth c. 3m; int. H c. 0.4m; ext. H 0.9m at E to c. 1.8m at N) separated by a fosse (Wth of base c. 2m) from an outer bank (at SSE: Wth of base 5.5m; Wth of top 2.8m; int. H 0.35m; ext. H 0.9m). The entrance through the inner bank (Wth of base 3m) and causeway (Wth of top 2.2m; H 0.4m) are at SE. It remains unplanted with its original trees within a coniferous forest (Digitalglobe image). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). Architectural heritage

• Fair Field, gate lodge, 1870–1890 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached two-bay single-storey gate lodge, built c.1880, with dormer-attic, gabled bay to north end of front, west, elevation, gable-fronted open porch, single-storey lean-to return to rear, and with canted bay window to south. Now derelict. Pitched slate roofs with grey clayware ridge tiles, red brick chimneystack with offset stacks having crenellated stone copings, and decorative scrolled timber bargeboards to gables. Coursed squared limestone walls with ashlar sandstone block-and-start quoins and plinth, red brick block-and-start quoins to return, ashlar sandstone walls to canted bay window, ashlar sandstone walls to porch with chamfered square-plan columns supporting Tudor-arch openings to front and sides. Square-headed window openings with chamfered ashlar sandstone surrounds, single-light to first floor, double-light to front gable with label-moulding, four-light to bay window, with sandstone sills. Tudor-arch door opening with chamfered ashlar sandstone surround and timber battened door. Set within grounds of former Fair Field demesne, house now demolished. Gateway immediately to north, and corrugated-iron hall to south.

• Fair Field, gates/railings/walls, 1830–1850 · Regional interest
  Description

  Quadrant gateway to Fair Field demesne, erected c.1840. House now demolished. Gateway comprising double-leaf cast-iron gate with fleur-de-lys and bud finials, with supporting collars, wrought-iron latch mechanism, and mounted on channelled ashlar sandstone piers with moulded plinths, cut-stone imposts, and surmounted by squat stepped caps. Gate hinges concealed behind rebates with bookend scroll details. Piers flanked by curved coursed limestone walls with ashlar copings, and with outer piers of similar form to inner. Set at roadside at northern entrance to former demesne, with gate lodge immediately to south.

• Community centre, 1920–1940 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached single-storey corrugated-iron hall, built c.1930, comprising three-bay block, with second block to north gable end and flush with same and presenting gable-fronts to long elevations that to west being three-bay and that to east two-bay, and with lower lean-to additions to south-west and south-east corners. Now disused. Pitched corrugated-iron roof with decoratively carved timber bargeboards to gables with pinnacles and finials, and cast-iron rainwater goods. Corrugated-iron sheeted walls on concrete foundations. Square-headed window openings with two-over-two pane horned timber sliding sash windows with timber sills. Square-headed door openings with battened timber doors. Set within grounds of former Fair Field country house. Gateway and gate lodge immediately to north.
