- GA083-036001 Moated site
Description
On the S-facing slope of a hill in pastureland. This rectangular moated site (38m NW-SE; 23m NE-SW), in fair condition, is defined by two banks and an intervening fosse. The inner bank is best preserved from WNW to N (H 1.7m). The fosse is visible all round and is wide and flat-bottomed (Wth 2.28m; D 1.3-1.7m). The outer bank (Wth 5m; ext. H 0.2m) is quite faint and survives only from S through W to WNW. There is a possible causeway (Wth c. 3m) across the fosse at SE and a gap in the inner bank (Wth 8m) at E. Apart from a short section of walling (L 2m; H 0.4m) in the ESE corner of the interior no visible surface trace of the associated castle (GA083-036002-) survives. In the NW part traces of a rectangular structure (L 18m; Wth 3.3m) defined by a stony bank (Wth 0.8m; H 0.4m) may be the remains of an internal division or a later wall. Lynch Athy (1913-14, 165-6) noted that 'beyond the ditch but running up to its bank’, there was ‘another square enclosure’ (see GA083-036003-). There is a large pond to the SSW of the monument. - GA083-036002 Castle - unclassified
Description
Associated with a moated site (GA083-036001-). This castle is named 'Site of Castle Parknanassa' on the 1838 edition of the OS 6-inch map, which suggests that it had already been demolished by that time. However, the OS Letters (O'Flanagan 1927, Vol. 1, 332) record 'an arched gateway' here noting that 'the name for it is in the Irish Cloch Aill'. In the OS Name Books of 1839 (No. 5, Oranmore Parish, p. 32) there is a drawing of an apparently mortared stone structure pierced by a round-headed arch with frayed masonry at either end. Its position within the moated site is unclear and no visible surface trace of it survives. This structure had been removed by the time of Lynch Athy's description (1914, 165-6). She recorded that it 'seems as though the walls of the Castle were built along the inside edge of the ditch [but] very few traces of the walls remain - just a few stones'. All that is now discernible is part of the foundations of a stone wall (L c. 2m, H 0.4m), constructed of large blocks, in the SE corner of the interior. This is probably part of the 'walls' referred to by Lynch Athy (ibid.) and they may have been the remains of a bawn wall. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 27 November 2018 This monument is subject to a preservation order made under the National Monuments Acts 1930 to 2014 (PO no. 10/1973).
- GA083-036003 Enclosure
Description
Associated with a moated site (GA083-036001-). Lynch Athy (1913-14, 165-6) recorded ‘another square enclosure’ which was located ‘beyond the ditch [of the moated site] but running up to its bank’. It was plainly visible ‘though only marked in the field by a low bank’. No visible surface trace of it was evident on inspection in September 1983. However, a levelled enclosure (c. 33m ENE-WSW; c. 25m NNW-SSE) is visible on aerial photographs (Google maps 2018, last accessed 27 November 2018) extending off the NW side of the moated site. It is most likely that this is the enclosure to which Lynch Athy (ibid.) was referring. A possible cashel (GA083-072----) also recorded to the W of it by Lynch Athy (ibid.) remains unlocated.
