Description
In pasture, on S-facing slope overlooking river valley. Sub-circular area (40m N-S; 39.5m E-W) defined by scarped edge NNW->WSW and truncated by public road WSW->NNW; shallow fosse (Wth 1m; D 0.2m) runs along base of scarp S->SW. Scarp (H 2.7m; Wth 12m) is best preserved E->SE. Interior, under pasture, slopes down to E. A number of sheds have been erected immediately NE of enclosure, with a large spoil heap from their construction dumped immediately N of enclosure. Description
In marshy pasture, on SSE-facing slope. Oval area (24.8m N-S; 18.5m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 1.25m; ext. H 1.8m) with external waterlogged fosse (D 0.6m; Wth 1.8). Bank best preserved at NE; slight dip in bank at SE (Wth 1.4). Enclosure is crossed by field boundary (H 1m) as a chord across interior ENE->WNW. Low earthen bank (H 0.3m) extends from enclosing bank to S for c. 20m before fading out. Level interior is under pasture N of field boundary but covered by dense overgrowth S of it. Description
In pasture, on E-facing slope. Circular area (53.1m N-S; 54.4m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank with external fosse (Wth 4.9m; D 1.1m). Bank (int. H 0.7m; ext. H 4.3m), covered with briars, becomes scarp-like NNW->N (int. H 0.3m). Rough break in bank (Wth 4.2m) at E. Fosse is waterlogged along N arc, narrows along S arc (Wth 3.5m), and has rubbish dumped into it where deepest at W. Counterscarp earthen bank (H 0.35m) runs along outer edge of fosse NNW->NE and ENE->E. Interior, under pasture, slopes down gently to E. Field boundaries abut enclosure at ESE and SSW. In pasture, atop hillock. Circular area (diam. 33.5m) defined by scarped edge, with external fosse (Wth 1.8m; D 0.1m) WNW->NNE. Scarp (H 2m; Wth 3m), best preserved at SE, lowers at SW (H 0.6m; Wth 1.45m). Counterscarp bank (ext. H 0.4m) at NNW. Description
In pasture, on SSE-facing slope immediately below brow of hill. Circular area (43.7m N-S; 45.6m E-W) enclosed by three concentric earth-and-stone banks with intervening fosses. Inner bank (int. H 1.9m; ext. H 4.5m), covered with gorse on sheer external face, is denuded by cattle NW->NNW. Middle bank (int. H 2m; ext. H 1m) has traces of stone facing atop external face along S arc. Outer bank (ext. H 0.65), best preserved SE->W, does not survive W->NW and NNE->ESE. Inner fosse (Wth 3.7m) is waterlogged with a rough causeway across it at SE matched by a gap in inner (Wth 5m) and middle (Wth 2.9m) banks. Outer fosse (Wth 1.4m; D 0.5m) is very shallow and survives only where outer bank is present. Interior, under pasture, slopes down to SE. There is a roughly circular rise (10m N-S x 8.2m E-W; H 0.4m) just SW-of-centre, and a sub-rectangular area (11.6m NW-SE x 5.9m E-W) enclosed by a low earth-and-stone bank (H 0.3m) to NE-of-centre. Field boundary clips line of outer bank W->NW. Earth-and-stone bank (H 0.6m), on E-W axis, abuts outer bank at ESE. Remains of a similar low linear bank run down-slope further to NE. Description
On SE-facing slope, on N edge of sheer fall into ravine. Oval area (26.5m N-S; c. 30m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank SW->SE and defined by scarped edge SE->SW. Bank (int. H 0.9m; ext. H 2.9m), best preserved along NE arc, lowers at SW (ext. H 1.2m). Scarp (H 2.35m; Wth 3.3m) drops to natural ledge (Wth 3.1m) above top of ravine S->WSW. Field boundary skirts around base of scarp (3.75m outside it) W->NNW. Interior, heavily masked by vegetation overgrowth, slopes down to S. Description
In low-lying marshy pasture, near base of NNE-facing hill slope. Sub-circular area (23.2m N-S; 21.8m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank E->W and defined by scarped edge W->E. Bank (int. H 0.95m; ext. H 1.45m), heavily masked by vegetation overgrowth, lowers at SE (ext. H 0.75m). Scarp (H 1.25m; Wth 4m), best preserved NNW->E, becomes very low W->NNW (H 0.2m; Wth 2m). Description
In pasture, on gentle NNE-facing slope; in SW corner of field c. 70m to the NW of Waterpark House. No evident surface trace of castle. Low natural-looking rise (18.6m N-S; 10.5m E-W; H 0.9m) with stream beside to W. Described in late-16th century as 'square, 50 feet wide outside the walls, and 30 feet wide … five separate rooms or chambers and two stories ... all the roofs entirely gone' (Westropp (1906-7, 244). Bank (int. H 0.5m; ext. H 1.55m; Wth ), masked by vegetation overgrowth, is best preserved SE->SSW. Break in bank at WSW (Wth 0.9m), and gap worn across bank by cattle at NNE. Description
In low-lying pasture, on gentle N-facing slope, on S verge of large marsh. Roughly oval area (60m N-S; 72.2m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank with external fosse (D 0.9m; Wth 3.3m). Bank (int. H 0.9m; ext. H 1.25m) best preserved NE->SSW, becomes low and flat-topped (Wth 1.05m) W->N, and eroded to scarped edge (H 0.7m; Wth 3.15m) SSW->W and NW->NE. Fosse, best preserved at ENE, is partially obscured along S arc by proximity of field boundary. Causeway (Wth 7m) across fosse at SW matched by slight dip in scarp. Description
In a marshy hollow in otherwise level pasture. A section of a N-S field boundary is composed of burnt material (L along boundary 5.5m; H 0.6m). This material is probably derived from the drain running along the E side of the boundary, though no further burnt material is evident along the sides of drain nor on the ground at either side of the boundary. Description
Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c. 1810. Hipped slate roof with rendered chimneystacks and limestone eaves course. Roughcast render over rubble limestone walls. Square-headed window openings having remains of six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows with limestone sills and internal timber shutters. Elliptical-headed opening having spoked fanlight over double-leaf timber panelled doors with sidelights having flanking timber Doric style pilasters. Gable-fronted outbuilding to west with pitched slate roof and snecked limestone walls. Elliptical-headed carriage arch having dressed limestone voussoirs. Pair of chamfered limestone piers to south.
