- LI032-073001 Barrow - ring-barrow
Description
One of a complex of 12 monuments (LI032-073001-/013-). Listed by O'Kelly as monument No. 3 and described in 1943 as following; 'This is a very slightly elevated rectangular platform surrounded by a continuous fosse, and is one of the Type A structures. It measures 70' [21m] north-south by 40' [12m], and the platform is barely 1' [0.3m] high. From the south-west corner of the fosse a straight shallow trench runs in a southerly direction and connects into the fosse of monument No. 4. All these monuments, except Nos. 1 to 5 inclusive, are situated in a low-land marsh. Nos. 1, 2, 3, 10, 11 and 12 are not marked on the OS Maps' (O'Kelly 1942-3, 181-2). The outline of the monument is not visible today on Digital Globe aerial photographs. - LI032-073002 Barrow - ring-barrow
Description
One of a complex of 12 monuments (LI032-073001-/013-). Listed by O'Kelly as monuments No. 4 & 5 and described in 1943 as following; 'These are the second pair of small forts. They are much better preserved than Nos. I and 2, and consist of continuous banks surrounded by well denned fosses. The banks are 2' [0.6m] to 3' [0.9m] high, and the overall diameters of both are 60' [18m]. A trench runs as described from the corner of rectangle No. 3 and joins into the fosse of No. 4 on the south-west side. From the fosse of No. 4 on the north-east side, a similar trench runs out and joins the fosse of No. 5 on the north-west side. The rectangle is 141' [43m] from No. 4 and No. 4 is 84' [26m] from No. 5 and all three are in a straight line running north and south. As the banks of Nos. 4 and 5 are continuous, these might be looked upon as ring-barrows. Their centres are level with the field outside. All these monuments, except Nos. 1 to 5 inclusive, are situated in a low-land marsh. Nos. 1, 2, 3, 10, 11 and 12 are not marked on the OS Maps' (O'Kelly 1942-3, 181-2). - LI032-073015 Earthwork
Description
On gently sloping ground falling E where a stream flows 750m N into the Camoge River. The feature is located 370m E of Cahercorney Church (LI032-072001-) and graveyard (LI032-072002-). Located within a complex of 12 monuments (LI032-073001-/013-) recorded by M. J. O'Kelly (1942-3, 181-2). The site is visible on OSi orthoimage taken 2005-12 and on Digital Globe orthoimage taken 2011-2013 as the W edge of a natural ridge that defines the W edge of the floodplain of a small stream that flows N into the Camoge River and defines where the ground rises to the W. Some of the archaeological sites within the complex are located in the stream floodplain in marshy ground as described by O'Kelly (1952/3, 181-2), O’Kelly identifies a further 6 monuments to the W on gently rising ground above the floodplain. The extent of the large V-shaped marshy floodplain defined by the higher ground around it is visible on Google Earth orthoimages taken 05/04/2006; 25/05/2017 and 20/09/2020. The site should appraised by field inspection. It may be the remains of a natural feature and not an archaeological monument.
